Amazing stay at the Yamadaya, the staff were amazing, Great location in the hills of Hakone. The dinner and breakfast were amazing traditional Japanese dishes, so tasty. The view from the room in the morning was lovely.

The room was clean, and onsen was great! The dinner and breakfast were both served in-room with traditional Japanese style. We arrived early and didn't get to use the pick-up service, but it was easy enough to just take the cable car to Souzan and walk to the hotel.

The pros: location is incredible, next to the ropeway. The staff were incredibly nice and went above and beyond with service. The hot spring was fantastic and really well maintained. Very good ryokan style experience. The cons: the rooms were not really well kept. Lots of cob webs around and the sink didn’t have hot water working. Other thing that may have been an isolated incident, but both me and my friend ate their traditional dinner service and following breakfast. That’s the only thing we ate for the day. We both got horribly sick for two days with seemingly food poisoning after eating these meals. Didn’t have this issue our entire time in Japan aside from this one location. If it weren’t for that one aspect, I would have rated it a 3.5/5.

The accommodation is very nice, the staff is very attentive and friendly. The onsen is wonderful. I had a room with private hot spring because I didn’t know if I’d have the courage to use the public one, but I ended up using both. The private onsen is much colder and deeper than the public one (I was there in a cold night in April - 1oC). They serve traditional Japanese breakfast.
