From the moment we arrived the service was excellent. The setting is beautiful and the staff are efficient and friendly. This really is a retreat and is very zen-like. Our room was beautiful, we even had a piano inside. Our bed had a really nice view of the little garden, where the open air onsen was located. The onsen was clean and it was so nice to sit in the warm water and take in the serene beauty of the place. The staff was really nice and took us by car to our room and to the busstop, they even wanted to take us to the restaurant, but we decided to walk. The breakfast was a gorgeous japanese style breakfast, which we got in our own separate room in the restaurant. All in all, would definitely recommend.

There were areas where you can access for different occasions, such as cafés, onsen, and relaxing library lounge. The library lounge was one of the unique places. It had a bungalow space where you could lean back and chill. Also, there were a big audio device where you could listen to music and relax. The best part though, was that they opened the cafés till 22 o'clock and the onsen till midnight!

We stayed in a ryokan with a private onsen with kaiseki meal package and had a great time. Staff was attentive and helped transport you around the facility via golf cart at request - this helped immensely with luggage transportation up and down the hillside that the property sits on. The kaiseki meals were well prepared and the staff spoke some English.

First the positives - we really liked the set dinner. It was wonderful. The Onsen was nice also. However there were many negatives which is surprising since we have never been disappointed with an Expedia VIP hotel until now. When we checked in, there wasn’t an offer of a welcome drink even though the check in counter was in front of the bar. This was surprising. The room itself was not impressive with paint chips and cracks all over the walls. This was shocking given the amount of $ we paid (nearly $500 for the night total). Interesting we read a review in 2023 saying the same thing ! Believe it. There is nothing in the immediate area. The day we left, we couldn’t get a taxi for hours since the area is so remote. The only solution was to have the hotel shuttle car drop us off at the bus stop in cold, rainy weather. The driver could have taken us to a nearby hotel at a different spot 10 mins away but they didn’t. Really? Lastly it states “no children” yet there were children everywhere! I would not recommend this hotel and Expedia should not be rating it as a 4 Star VIP property. We spent two weeks in Japan and this was by far our worst hotel we stayed at. So many other choices for the money.

I would skip this retreat if you are looking for a nice Onsen. Our cabin was not properly cleaned, where we saw visible dust, cobwebs, and a giant spider! The view from our cabin was not like the gorgeous pictures on their listing. We were quite disappointed overall, especially with what we paid.

Hakone Retreat Före ist ein sehr idyllischer und äußerst ruhiger Ort. Man kann sehr gut entspannen und die Ruhe genießen. Das kleine Café ist gefühlt immer geöffnet und man kann sich dort sehr leckeren Kaffee und Kuchen schmecken lassen. Wir empfehlen auf alle Fälle das japanische Abendessen, es ist eine tolle Erfahrung und super lecker! Das Personal ist sehr freundlich und bemüht. Ein Großteil von ihnen spricht jedoch ausschließlich japanisch, was die Kommunikation und Informationsweitergabe durchaus erschwert und viel Zeit in Anspruch nimmt. Allgemein sind die Zimmer sehr geräumig, jedoch nicht mehr auf dem neusten Stand und teilweise ist es nicht immer ganz so sauber.

Our least favourite stay in Japan. They do not prioritize guests for their dining, no one greeted us at check-in (we had to hike in the dark from the road up to reception). The staff were SUPER unhelpful and a bit rude. The walls in the room were peeling. Although it is on a bus route, there is not much transportation here. It was a huge disappointment and I wish we could get a refund and have stayed elsewhere.,

The check in process was a bit confusing and it was hard to communicate with the staff about the local area and getting around so it made departure a bit complicated. I would never recommend staying here. While some staff was lovely, on average they were incredibly rude and dismissive. The room itself was a dump; they promised to drive us to a couple places nearby and when asked, laughed in our faces and told us absolutely not. And then we got stranded with no way home - no Ubers would pick us up, and the hotel REFUSED to come (6 min drive). So, the only way home due to torrential rain and dangerous walk was a stranger who offered to drive us. Not to mention the showers look like a prison cell (and smell disgusting). One of the worst stays of my life. Would never, ever, ever recommend.

Då hade de stora svårigheter med att hjälpa oss navigera i buss-och tågtidtabeller. Med tanke på priset så var mina förväntningar på det högre. This hotel is beautiful! We ended up booking an extra night because we loved the area so much. Hakone is a beautiful town full of nature. It’s so green all around. The hotel has a great bakery coffee area where they hand make their breads. There is a bus stop down the end of the road which takes you everywhere. Not a lot of dining options in the town but the hotel has a great little restaurant.

Beautiful location, very comfortable, excellent service and good food. The room, facilities and grounds are beautiful. It is a little remote so a car or fairly pricey taxis are needed as busses tend to be a bit slow and complicated to get anywhere. We wished we had staid longer.

Wenn ihr Euch zu einer bestimmten Uhrzeit anmeldet, dann werdet ihr vom Bus abgeholt. Die Busstation ist direkt neben der Auffahrt zur Unterkunft. Ein sehr kurzer Weg, aber auch steil. Wir hatten Glück und es stand zufällig ein Fahrdienst da. Sehr freundliches Personal. Wir hatten ausserhalb der Unterkunft gegessen. Empfehlungen haben wir uns von der Unterkunft geben lassen. War super gut. Wir wurden dann auch nach dem Essen vom Fahrdienst abgeholt.

This is a special place with excellent service. The private onsen was wonderful! The room/cabin was so comfortable, clean, spacious, well stocked, excellent products, safe, and private. The first dinner menu was one of the best Kaiseki experiences. The chef is talented! The second menu was good- but a step away from the first. My only recommendation would be to include non-alcoholic beverages with the included meals. These were available at an additional cost which is not consistent with the luxury and exclusivity of this property. Would highly recommend this property for anyone wanting a few days of quiet luxury, an onsen experience and peaceful beautiful outdoor surroundings.

This is a great place for a weekend get away. Everything in the town closes at 5 so be mindful of that when visiting the town. Food is very good and highly suggest trying the Japanese style breakfast at least once. It was a very neat experience. Traditional breakfast was very basic.
