Powder House Lodge

This was a lovely place to stay. We had designated parking with our room number, so we were assured of a close parking spot. The dining room was open for all three meals, and the food was great. Our room was clean and quiet.

Very unique layout. Log cabin look. Conveniently right off highway, 3 minutes outside of business district of Keystone. Excellent breakfast, made to order, reasonable prices. I'd give it a 7.5/10 on wheelchair ADA ACCESSIBILITY.

This property is very close to Mount Rushmore and the kids liked the outdoor heated pool. But because the restaurant is so popular, it was very hard to find close parking when we arrived around dinner time.

The restaurant in site is delicious!!! I brought my 5 granddaughters and we were comfortable - the outdoor pool awesome!!! Thank you for a lovely time💕

There are a lot of steps to the cabins or rooms up the hill. So, if you have old achy knees, think twice. We had to walk up 16 or more stone steps up a steep embankment to get to our room. Painful! Most cabins or room had wooden steps. The good part was the staff were nice, helpful, friendly. The on-property restaurant served breakfast, lunch and dinner and was very good and reasonable. Had a beautiful setting.

EV Charging, though down in the main parking lot, no problem leaving the car charging overnight. Great restaurant and (mostly) friendly front desk. Laundry close to our room was convenient. We liked that it is away from the Keystone town center, but close enough to drive to the Mt. Rushmore Evening Lighting Ceremony after a late dinner.

Driving up we were a little concerned as there were no signs for check in! Signage is not very good for anything except the restaurant! Once I got someone to the desk, checkin was easy! Parking was difficult in the room area! With a truck, it was impossible to maneuver into a parking space! The room was quaint and comfortable! The AC was loud but drowned out road noise! The system of providing what was needed daily with a checklist was clever! A few suggestions: motion lights for night arrivals so you can see the step and walkway from the parking lot; phone didn’t work and we could not find ice machine! It would be nice to have a list of general info in each room! After I realized the phone didn’t work, I used my cell to call the front desk and had to search to find the number!! Again, a helpful info sheet would’ve been nice!!

Great location for exploring Mount Rushmore and surrounding Needles Highway and Sylvan Lake. Cabins were clean and comfy. The restaurant was really good too. Nice pool and playground for kids. Highly recommended.

We loved our stay. The owners truly care and their property is well-maintained. The restaurant food was amazing. The pool was clean and heated. The beds were comfy. Loved the location.

Great heated pool and little playground for the kids. Our room was by the road but the ac drowned out the noise from the road. I like a fan noise when sleeping but at times the ac was a little too loud, otherwise great stay, great food at restaurant also.

Very dark room and very dated. A bit of mold outside the shower and I had to kill a black bug in there. Also, brochures they gave us said restaurant hours were until 9pm, but was told they close at 8pm when I tried to order take out food. Very disappointed.

Room was musty smelling, not that clean. Used some cloth wipes to wipe off surfaces- people upstairs were loud. Room was not at all what we expected.

We stayed two nights in one of the motel rooms and five nights in one of the cabins. Both were cleaned excellently and were very cozy. The cabin had a kitchenette and came stocked with pots and pans, dishware, silverware, and cooking utensils. We ate breakfast and dinner at the Powder House restaurant. We had a great experience dining in for breakfast and placing pickup orders for dinner to eat back in our motel room. All of the staff were really friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone wanting scenic lodging in the Black Hills!

We had an excellent stay at The Powder House! Friendly staff greeted us as we arrived. Accommodations were also very clean, and equipped with everything we needed. The food in the dining room was delicious and second to none, along with an excellent wait staff. If you’re staying in the Blacks Hills, this is a great option, as the location is central to everything! I would highly recommend this lodging to anyone visiting the area, and will stay here again.

Overpriced. We had mold all over the bathroom ceiling and the manager didnt act like anyone noticed. They refunded me for one of our nights and cleaned some of it but there were still noticable spores around the top of the walls. Our room also had a broken chair and the loft is impossible to keep cool so our kids were sweating all night. For over 200 dollars a night, I expected a lot more. The food was good but is also too expensive for what you get. Cereal was almost 6 dollars! I was unimpressed and wished I had not splurged and would've been better off at the super 8.

No Wifi

Not bad, not great. Wifi is limited the further you are from the main building. Get a room close. Also, try to get away from the road. It can be noisy. Room was totally fine and comfy. The restaurant is great, and their coffee is, no joke, the best I've ever had.

The room was small, but very clean. The AC/heater was older and pretty noisy, but that helped cover the street noise. The water pressure in the shower was great. The bed was comfortable, but the pillows were not great. All the staff were friendly and helpful. We tend to spend a bit of time in our room, so it was a little small for our complete comfort, but it was well kept up and all the linens were in grwat shape.

The room was clean, charming cabin look. The bed was comfortable. For the money you pay for the room, overall it was good. The restaurant was very good and would go back just to eat there. The location was great. 8 minutes to Mt Rushmore and just around corner from shops. The reason we gave 4 stars instead of 5, the air unit for the room was extremely loud, we finally turned it off, but then the mini fridge was loud when the compressor turned on during its cycles. Made for a long night. Also, being one with allergies to fragrance, the room had so much fragrance in it, I had to take benedryl. It was strong. I would advise the managers to consider using less of whatever they are using. It was overpowering. I would pass on staying there again just because of that reason.

This property has a great location and good restaurant, but is basically a motel with small rooms and very basic, dated amenities.

We absolutely love staying at the Powder House lodge. Great cabins and phenomenal, well-priced food at their restaurant. The only negative would be road noise in some of the cabins.

The setting is absolutely beautiful, up on a hill, surrounded by trees and well cared for grounds. Location is excellent, set back off the highway yet immediate access to it. The cabins are situated very nicely--no one is "jammed" in with their neighbor. The restaurant on premises (just as you enter off the main road) was phenomenal. Excellent food and service; lovely setting! Our cabin had a livingroom, bedroom and loft and I believe it sleeps 8. We were 3 and it felt "smallish." The kitchenette is tiny.Hardly any counterspace. Microwave, coffeemaker and mini (very mini) fridge looked like a kid's play kitchen. There is a round table with 3 chairs only--worked for us but a larger group would have to take turns. We made this work by having only coffee, donuts and danish in our cabin. There is 1 wall AC in the living room/kitchenette area. Despite the temperature outside being cool at night, the AC could not reach the bedroom or loft. The loft was particularly warm/uncomfortable. One of us ended up using the sofabed in the living room instead of the bed in the loft. If we closed our bedroom door, it was quite warm so we slept with that door open as well even though hardly any cool air reached the room. Bathroom was clean and towels were plentiful The wall knob for the heater there didn't work. We reported it the same day we arrived. No one came by...at least not during our stay.

I reserved a cabin not knowing we were attached to another cabin so really a cabin split into to rooms. We had to share the porch so kind of uncomfortable sitting with people you don't know so I went inside.

Staff were excellent - incredibly friendly… thought the front desk associate was the owner even! Powder House is staying true to the Black Hills vibes, love the authenticity of the entire property, not just the room itself!

This was a very neat place to stay on my solo trip to the Black Hills area. The restaurant was very nice and the food very delicious. Staff was extremely friendly and welcoming.

Why this place received such good reviews is beyond me. Rude owner and host, food was nothing to write home about and the room was extremely small, bed was uncomfortable, no phone in the room, no cell signal, WiFi was very weak etc. etc. The steps to the room are natural stone and very uneven and I almost fell twice. I saw another older couple that had the same problem. Owner did not care. Suggested I can go somewhere else. Just horrible. I will never go there again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two-night stay. Cabin was great, staff was very friendly and helpful, and the location was perfect for our travels in the Black Hills area. If we return to the area, we will stay here again. Very nice!

It was probably my fault, but I did not realize check-in ended at 10pm. I arrived at 10pm. We were checked in and the desk clerk hoped everything would be fine. I said, we would call if it wasn’t, and laughed. He stated without laughing that no one would be there, the desk closed at 10. I understand wanting to leave on time. I hate it when people come in at the last minute, but I felt this was rather rude. The room was fine, except the shower ran all over the floor, and we could have used extra towels. Maybe we wouldn’t have asked the front desk for any anyway.

Great facility and staff but inability to contact staff with issue prior to 7am is a problem when coffee maker in room was broken.

The staff was courteous, attentive, very helpful. Great customer service.

Powder House Lodge has a very professional and courteous staff, and is conveniently located about 10 minutes from Mount Rushmore. The on site restaurant has great food and friendly staff. Would definitely stay here again if I were to visit the area.

Very nice clean cabins. Only a few minutes drive from downtown keystone shops. About an 8 minutes drive to Mt. Rushmore

We just needed a basic room as a base while we visited the nearby parks, and Powder House was everything we needed. Clean, convenient, and the restaurant was very good. I would certainly recommend.

Great location for Mt Rushmore

Perfect for our stay in the Keystone area! Conveniently located, a short distance away from the congested area of downtown Keystone, Mount Rushmore, etc. Room was clean & updated. Excellent service all around, from the reception/frint desk to the hostess and waitstaff at the restaurant! Which, provided an outstanding dining experience. Delicious food, a variety of menu options (including GF and DF options) and attentive waitstaff. We cannot praise this quaint yet uber hospitable establishment enough to do it the justice it deserves!

Close to town but not right in the middle of things.

Quiet well-maintained property conveniently located onsite excellent restaurant. Close to attractions, National and State Parks.

The property is in a great location that is close to things to do. It's also in the beautiful Black Hills.

We stayed in the lodge/motel for two nights, which was a convenient location to Mount Rushmore. We also had dinner at the Powder House Lodge Restaurant and the food and service were great. The place had zero available tables and people waiting, so go early.

This is our second time at Powder House, it definitely doesn’t disappoint. The pool is fantastic and so is the restaurant on site! The restaurant worked perfect for ordering online and eating at our cabin or by the pool. The only complaint is the AC units in the cabins are super loud and some mini splits would go along way. Also some recycling cans available would be good too.

We saw good reviews online for the restaurant. They said it would be a shame to miss it. Wrong...The elk was tough. The vegetables served were a frozen veggies. What restaurant serves frozen vegetables? Poor quality food.

The food was beyond excellent!

Very disappointed in the quality of food. We ( Sister and I ) ordered the Elk medallions and each received 2 chunks of Elk that were so tough that we needed a sawzaw to cut through it. IT was the worst Elk dish I have ever had at a restaurant. I should have sent it back to the kitchen but didn't want to make a scene. The mash potatoes were salty. The side salad was good though.

The restaurant was the property jewel. Fine dining at a reasonable price. Food, staff, and chefs are top notch.
