Impeccable in every way from before check-in to after check-out. Super-likes: (1) Complimentary transfers are provided between the ryokan and Gora station/other nearby destinations. They graciously accommodated even our very last minute transport requests. (2) Kind and helpful staff who anticipated our every need and went out of their way to ensure we didn’t have to lift a finger or break a sweat. Everyone we encountered provided truly world-class service. Special thanks to our room assistant Raia and the gentleman who greeted us at Gora station and dropped us off - they really went above and beyond. (3) Beautiful, peaceful and sparkling clean grounds and facilities. The family onsen was a huge bonus. We did not utilise the bigger gender-segregated baths but they looked inviting. We did spend some time in the indoor pool and outdoor hot tub which were perfect for a cold rainy day. (4) Huge and well-equipped Japanese-style room with a beautiful garden. We wanted to experience sleeping on futons, which turned out to be very comfortable indeed. (5) Dinner and breakfast were an eye-opening and never-ending spread of top-notch local cuisine. (6) Complimentary mini bar with free soft drinks and beer (which we unfortunately did not fully utilise!) on top of abundant drinking water (Fuji mineral water). (7) Numerous thoughtful little touches like a box of post-dinner sweets, framed commemorative family photo and farewell souvenirs. Worth every last penny and more.

Let me start by saying that the service and staff were impeccable, and the food was traditional and delicious. But the other parts of our stay did not feel luxurious or comfortable. We stayed in a standard Japanese room A with tatami beds. The room had a funky musty odor and overheated at night. We finally had to cool it down by opening the door, but only to hear trains go by. The room had an air purifier in it which should’ve been a signal of the sewage like smell which may have been emanating from the drain pipe outside or the bathroom. Eventually, I used earplugs and sprayed perfume around me to be able to sleep. The pillows are bulky and hard which may be traditional and unfortunately I didn’t think to ask if they had a different type of pillow till late at night. The room does not have much of an outdoor space, and no view of Japanese gardens as I had imagined might be. Other room types may have nicer backyard and outdoor tub, but definitely not this one. In fact, the entire property does not have a garden to walk around or much of an outdoor space to lounge in. Private onsen has to be booked in advance as well as the dated looking swimming pool. Our meals were in banquet hall looking space that also lacked charm (maybe they put us there because we had kids with us). Overall, our stay did not meet expectations at the price point we paid and unfortunately I will not be recommending this stay.

rooms are old and (maybe inconvenient) but everything else is almost perfect: great dinner, breakfast, beautiful swimming pool, library, garden, water streams, moss, bamboo tree walls... it has every Japan. it's the most beautiful part of japan.

Gora Kadan’s staff and service were beyond exceptional! It was the perfect relaxing retreat after running around Tokyo. The onsens and other on-site facilities were top notch, and the kaiseki dinner and Japanese breakfast was well thought out and delicious. Would definitely book here again!

There’s no doubt this is an excellent hotel. But the question is whether it’s excellent enough to justify its price. Not quite was our conclusion. Service was absolutely sensational and the overall feel of the hotel is absolutely wonderful as an authentic Ryokan experience. But there is just a bit of wear and tear in the rooms and the onsen area isn’t all that impressive for a hotel of this caliber. Little things like a broken espresso machine (meaning none available in the hotel)

Though a short ride it is much appreciated with children and luggage. The private in room open air onsen is such a treat for families. Beautiful amenties - pool, gym and male/female onsens that swap gender in the middle of the night so if you stay longer than one night you can experience a different outdoor onsen view. The adults had a great in room massage. Kaseiki dinner and Japanese style breakfast was one of our best meals we had in Japan. Highly recommend and hope to return.

The staff, grounds, and food were all superb. We booked the Open Air Big Stone Bath room type so we had a private hot springs bath in our onsen. It was amazing to get in whenever we wanted, but it may be unnecessary depending on your budget since their public (hotel guests only) open air baths are so spectacular. Also, if you don’t book a room with a private bath, you can reserve a time slot for a private one on the hotel grounds. The time slots will give you access to a private bath, steam spa and bathroom for 40 minutes. We did this for the experience and it was a beautiful and relaxing private bath with forest vegetation to look at. There is a downside to the Gora Kadan but it is still 5 stars for me. I mention it next because I feel it is worth noting. When I first arrived I heard some traffic noise from vehicles and the mountain railway from our room. I was initially discouraged by this but the experience at the hotel that followed muted my disappointment. If I knew about this beforehand, I may not have booked but that would have been a mistake and an amazing experience missed. You may be able avoid the noise if you book one of their higher end rooms. I’m not sure. Absolutely make sure you book a room with in room meals though. I believe at least one of the annex rooms does not have in room meals. At this price point, I often do not feel like we got our moneys worth from our accommodation but with the Gora Kadan we absolutely did.

全てにおいて最高のもてなしでした。 ただし、清掃スタッフの教育は必要と感じました。 男子トイレの個室を利用していた際に、複数の女性清掃スタッフが声かけもなく入って来ました。女性といえども気持ちの良いものではありませんし、個室を利用しているにもかかわらず、そのまま作業は続けるし、個室からでてもバツが悪そうにもしていません。 せっかく接客するスタッフの対応が素晴らしいのにとても残念でした。

送迎や近隣のレストランへの移動もお手伝いいただき大変ありがたかったです。お料理は味もボリュームも最高で翌日まで家族全員であれが美味しかったこれが好きだったと話がつきませんでした。ホスピタリティも至れり尽くせりで温泉もサロンも堪能させていただきました。 ひとつだけ、私も夫も残念に思ったことがお部屋のタオルの臭いでした。フェイスタオルが数枚、酸っぱい臭いがしたので煮沸や漂白が効かないなら交換された方が良いと思いました。 それ以外は何も問題ございません。 お部屋も清潔で快適に過ごせましたし、館内のインセンスがとても良い香りでとっても落ち着いて心も身体もリラックスできました。 ぜひまた同じ季節に訪問させていただきたいと思っております。

The hotel is tired. There was no early check in and really nothing much to do at the hotel while we waited for our room. The rooms are nice in size and very clean and service was amazing. Food was ok and there was just a smell like wet cat food that we couldn’t shake. It was our last stop in a 14 day journey and we were hoping for more with the price tag is all.

The hospitality was excellent and service was first class. The only complaint was that the towels could washed a bit more carefully, but otherwise, everything else was great.

Very surprised that there were areas that were not clean - nor appeared as though any attention had been paid to in a long time. The setting was beautiful and the lobby magnificent. Correspondence was excellent. Spa services extremely disappointing. Menu wasn't great.

Gora Kadan is a unique experience, from the moment we were greeted at reception to the moment of our departure. Our room was beautiful and peaceful. The hotel went out of their way to accommodate our annoying dietary restrictions (one pescatarian and one who doesn’t eat shellfish) - the food was fantastic. We had a shiatsu massage which was amazing. Breakfast was delicious. We were sorry to leave. Hope we’ll be back

A disappointing experience overall - slow check in, facilities need to be update, preferences provided in advance were not followed, room was warm and could not be cooled below 74F, staff was very friendly but not very knowledgeable, train tracks near property were surprisingly loud, etc. Not worth the price.

Stayed at Gora Kadan for one night We arrived in Gora from Tokyo mid morning & spent the time until 3pm check in exploring the area, We had a wonderful stay, looked after extremely well by Shuto who also served our evening meal in our room in true Rokyan style Dinner was outstanding, our dietary requirements were so well taken care of, each dish was exquisite Breakfast was also delicious & served in our room by Shuto Our room was spacious, & had an outdoor private onsen, so relaxing to sit in the hot spring water in the peace & private surroundings As other comments there are some improvements or maintenance required in some areas which are looking a little jaded, maybe there is already plans for this We had the best nights sleep at Gora Kadan so far on our trip & a truly great experience

The room is perfect and the staff are very detailed in service. Definately a five star stay. Food is included and is delicious. The onsen is inviting and peaceful. Beautiful facility.

The property is designed with a lot of thought. However the room we stayed was very dated with paint peeling off and damaged furniture. Not sure I would stay here again.

We stayed for one night at Gora Kadan in late March '23 and it was fabulous. The level of service was extraordinary from arrival to departure and the ryokan itself is really stunning. Our room was the largest we have ever had in Japan, with a serene view of a private Japanese garden. We didn't have a private onsen (some rooms do) but that was fine as the public onsen are fabulous, with both indoor and outdoor bathing, separate facilities for men and women. The room service from our wonderful "room assistant" was excellent, she was so professional and sweet. We had a 9 course kaiseki dinner in the room and a large traditional Japanese breakfast the next morning. We also hung out in the bar during the evening in our yukata, sipping whiskey and admiring the surrounding nature through floor to ceiling windows. The futon beds were very comfortable, we slept like babies. After breakfast the next day it was an easy 10 minute walk to the Hakone open air art museum (a must!) and when we were finished at the museum the hotel dropped our bags to us at the train station so we wouldn't have to schlepp them. We don't normally spend this kind of money on hotels, it was a splurge for u. But when you factor in the incredible meals and personalized service Gora Kadan feels completely worth it and a great highlight of our trip.

We had a wonderful stay at Gora Kadan celebrating our honeymoon. The room was spectacular, the food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. Overall a wonderful experience!

We stayed at Gora Kadan and were deeply moved by the extraordinary kindness and support we received from the staff during a sudden medical emergency. Not only was the team quick to respond and incredibly caring, but one of the staff members even accompanied us in the ambulance and stayed by our side at the hospital to help us communicate with the doctors and medical staff. At the same time, the manager personally drove our children to the hospital so we could all be together as a family during this stressful moment. This thoughtful gesture went far beyond anything we could have expected and speaks volumes about the level of dedication and genuine kindness that defines Gora Kadan. We will never forget the care and support we received. Our heartfelt thanks to Pola, the manager, and the entire team for being by our side when we needed it most.

The staff was unbelievable. They made you feel at home from the moment you enter Gora Kadan. The food was amazing and we loved every moment. We will definitely return.

Incredible - our best accommodations in Japan. Facilities are beautiful (rooms, pool, grounds), service is over the top (they will drive you to all the local places and pick you up from the train), in room dining was amazing, and private in-room hot spring baths was wonderful. The area has so much to offer - one night didn't feel like enough. A peaceful escape from Tokyo.

We have traveled the world over and stayed at exceptionally luxurious resorts. We can attest that Gora Kadan was the very best. The service, food, beautiful location, serenity, treatments, and baths were beyond extraordinary.

Lovely staff and wonderfully calming property. Appreciate that it retained it's historical charm and interesting to see the Japanese and western/colonial influence. Private transportation was also provided for any short treks. Very thoughtful.

This was an absolutely heavenly stay! I highly recommend for the most serene, peaceful, tranquil stay on the side of the mountain with breathtaking views. I am so grateful to everyone for providing such warm hospitality! I look forward to returning someday soon!

Was a unique experience but they didn’t respond to my food requirements and our dinner was negatively impacted. The woman who helped us didn’t speak any English and wasn’t very nice. I’m a hotel owner and I rarely write negative reviews.

部屋付きのスタッフの方がとてもテキパキ世話をしてくれ静かな雰囲気の中でゆっくりと快適に過ごすことができました。大浴場も良かったです。ただこのグレードの旅館の食事としてはごく普通でした。食事は残念でした。

Just perfect. The entire experience of staying at this traditional Japanese ryokan was just amazing. The gorgeous multi-course kaiseki meals served in your room were stunning and delicious. Japanese hospitality is second to none. The grounds are lush and the amenities clean and peaceful. We had an onsen in our room which was so relaxing. Pricy but life is about experiences, and this one was divine.

Staff was friendly, polite, responsive, helpful and facility was clean with many relaxing facilities. Onsens were beautiful and in the nature. Food was excellent I would recommend this place to anyone wanting to experience something different, unique and peaceful. I will come back
