Affordable and unique place to stay in Reykjavik. The private room was clean and had everything we needed in order to be comfortable. We had a lovely mountain view and a comfy bed. Common areas were not in great shape - shared bathrooms are grimy and get really gross by the end of the night due to so much use during the day. Shared Kitchen felt grubby and the shared fridges were brimming with unlabeled products. Staff were super kind and helpful. There is construction going on within the hostel as well as on both sides of the hostel, as well as in the street in front, so the atmosphere is not the nicest in that regard.

Unfortunately Kex Hostel didn't meet expectations. Barely any signage outside to show for, surrounded by dilapidated buildings with construction debris littering by the entrance. Interior shows no proper work has been done to convert the building from whatever it was to a hostel. Lack of elevators makes it difficult to come here with a suitcase. Last time in Reykjavik I stayed at a similarly priced hostel with much better accommodations. Perhaps only good part was the cleaning. Absolutely cannot recommend this place.

Private room with shower was perfect. To be able to access the kitchen through our stay made it even better! Kitchen when used was clean and the free shelf was amazing! Check it out before going to the shop! Building work going on next door but wasn’t in enough to hear it. Black out curtains work but can’t see the northern lights from your rooms because the building works next door has a spotlight that floods your room with light at night time even with your own lights off. Can’t fault the private room we had although it could do with more storage. 4 hooks isn’t enough for a week stay. Great designed hotel. Quirky and fun and felt safe and wasn’t noisy even with a group of school kids we didn’t hear a sound on the private floor.

I slept in the 42 bed room and expected chaos. Instead, it was very peaceful and I slept well. The beds are divided into many sections, so it doesn't feel like a 42 bed dormitory. Lots of people were hanging out in the bar/kitchen area at night and it looked like a fun time for travelers. Unfortunately, they do not provide locks so I had to buy one from them. You should try to bring your own lock.

The hostel is super clean, with great vibes and comfy accommodations. There are a lot of bathrooms, and there is a kitchen in every floor, and it was usually clean too. They offer breakfast for 2700 ISK, but I didn’t get it any day because of tour times. They are close to bus stop 9, in which you can hop on any tour. My first day I got an aurora alert in my app, and just crossed the streets from KEX and could see them above the water, it was beautiful. The only down, for me, is that we didn’t have complementary towels, and wasn’t prepared for this. I would highly recommend them, and hope to stay there again one day.

I could tell the place was undergoing renovation, but the parts that were open were super great. I would look forward to staying here again, especially when all the fixes are in place in the future. Staff was very friendly and the Kex is at a great location and has excellent views of the bay. Great bar as well.

Bathroom stall door lock was broken, no toilet paper in restroom, no soap in restroom, paper towel dispenser didn’t work all three days. This was all just on the third floor. Walls are paper thin so you hear every loud person talking, every person walking, every item dropped, and was there a woman or child bawling on Sunday morning?!? It isn’t just the noise in your own room that you have to endure.

Overall, very good for a hostel. Everyone at the front desk was very helpful and friendly. My only somewhat negative experience was many of the bathrooms on the 4th smelled like urine, especially when you'd shower. The staff works very hard to keep things clean, so not much to do about that. Would book here agin!

It was quite dirty, ended up walking barefoot for less than 5 mins and my feet were black. The walls were also paper thin, we could hear people cooking down the hall. Staff was nice and the price point reflects the conditions I suppose, but I would stay elsewhere next time.

The doors bang all night long, the building is concrete so you can hear it everywhere. The washrooms are dirty and wet all the time there was never soap or paper towels even when they were just cleaned. I expected a bit more for the price.

It was a very clean place! Every day, the staff washed the floors and cleaned everywhere. Including Kitchen! Cleanliness was my top priority, and I really appreciated that. A couple of small things: I would have appreciated clearer labels indicating where the trash and recycling go—people were throwing everything together in the kitchen. Overall, I would totally recommend this hostel 🙏

Aesthetically pleasing property, and the bed was comfortable. Otherwise this property had very little to offer. The bar/reception area hosted a very small concert, but used speakers loud enough for an amphitheater, the noise shook the entire building late into the night. Above all, almost every shower had black mold and the toilets were left with urine and feces for our entire stay.

At first, I assumed it was inconsiderate guests coming in late, but it quickly became clear it was just how the doors closed, and it happened constantly — about every 10 minutes — from the time I went to bed until I finally gave up and got up at 6 a.m. Earplugs didn’t help, as the impact shook the room and woke me each time. It’s unfortunate, because otherwise the stay was great — excellent service, convenient location, and good amenities.

Overall we really loved our stay at Kex. The hostel was very clean and I loved the decorations. We were able to walk all around the city with no issues, even parked our van out front. The only negatives were how small the private dorms were, for 2 people plus our luggage we were very squished. The bathroom was beautiful but not very functional, the open shower sprayed water everywhere. The vanity had little room to store your toiletries. We made do since it was a short stay but it could be claustrophobic for a lot of people. The staff were all great! We would definitely return!

Loved my ocean view room. Appreciated the wool blanket and duvets. Game room lounge was nice to have. Enjoyed the breakfast on site. My room was fine. People traveling with me who stayed in the tiny room complained of mildew smell.

We had a private room with a great view of the harbor. The facility is old and shabby but was clean and comfortable. Very noisy at night and our room was above the entrance where apparently people hang out and chat which is fine unless you’re trying to sleep.

The front desk people were amazing. Older building, but the beds were comfortable. Noisy due to construction, but can’t complain, beyond the control of the hostel. I’d rebook in a heart beat. This place is in a very good location as well.

Very helpful staff. I had an issue with my tour guide company where the driver left me. I called the hotel and they contacted the company on my behalf and fixed the issue. Thank you for your help. Excellent stay!

The staff was extremely helpful, nice and professional. I first booked as a solo traveler for a bedroom and later was updated to 2 people; there was a miniscule hiccup where the bed was a double instead of 2 twins. But that was quickly sorted out before check in time and we were very happy that the staff was so accommodating and worked so quickly. The room had a great view and the communal spaces were nice also. The staff was extremely helpful, nice and professional. I first booked as a solo traveler for a bedroom and later was updated to 2 people; there was a miniscule hiccup where the bed was a double instead of 2 twins. But that was quickly sorted out before check in time and we were very happy that the staff was so accommodating and worked so quickly. The room had a great view and the communal spaces were nice also. I stayed 9 nights in your hostel before getting my student accommodation at the University of Iceland, and thought it was going to be a rough time staying for so long. But I was happily surprised of how much I liked it! The bed was really comfortable and I really enjoyed the change of people in the room. The service and cleaning was also good, so I would absolutely go back again! Thank you!

I stayed at Kex Hostel for one day and it was amazing. I had to take a taxi very urgently to get to the airport, and the man at the front desk was very helpful! He explained my situation to the taxi driver so I was listed as a priority rider, and was able to get to the airport just in time. Would like to stay here next time when I visit Reykjavik :)

The location is excellent for city tours, pick up, drop off by tour buses, grocery stores and to from airport. Plus views of bay from the location is incredible. However, they need to work on sanitation of the bathrooms, kitchen. Sunday 24, we had a heavy rainstorm and winds all day. There was water dripping from kitchen ceiling. We did put down 2~3 pots to catch it. None of staffs were show up. Also they have a lot of events going on Friday and weekend. Even if, they provide earplugs, there is no way, you can fall a sleep before 1:00am. I believe that things can be improved

The front desk people were amazing. Older building, but the beds were comfortable. Noisy due to construction, but can’t complain, beyond the control of the hostel. I’d rebook in a heart beat. This place is in a very good location as well.

The hostel is super clean, with great vibes and comfy accommodations. There are a lot of bathrooms, and there is a kitchen in every floor, and it was usually clean too. They offer breakfast for 2700 ISK, but I didn’t get it any day because of tour times. They are close to bus stop 9, in which you can hop on any tour. My first day I got an aurora alert in my app, and just crossed the streets from KEX and could see them above the water, it was beautiful. The only down, for me, is that we didn’t have complementary towels, and wasn’t prepared for this. I would highly recommend them, and hope to stay there again one day.

Property had a band that played and then a DJ downstairs until all hours of the morning. It was so loud it actually shook our room. Super inconsiderate as it’s a literal hostel for people to sleep. The bathrooms were also not very clean I was grossed out using them. No towel included with room either. I had stayed at Baron’s Hostel up the road prior and would highly recommend
