For a four star hotel the amenities were not great. The bar was also the reception which was also the lounge. Not really conducive to having a drink before or after dinner. Wifi was very poor and in some cases not available and we were on the first floor . Location is a bit far for walking to the castle and centre of Edinburgh. The best thing was the gym which was well appointed if a little small. When three people are in there it gets cramped which tells you all you need to know.

Everything was excellent except the fact their door lock system was down and we needed concierge to open the door every single time. However, they were always available and fast on that: I see that issue in predictable and that does not effect how good the stay was.

The breakfast was very good. I liked that it had a gym. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The room was decent, maybe a bit small. They should clean up around the outside of the building as the trash takes away from the general appearance.

One night stay to attend concert. Coming to Edinburgh by car so needed parking. The info via Hotels.com says low clearance onsite parking but also offsite. Email confirmation says only offsite and too late to change when that was received and wouldn’t have got refund. There isn’t any onsite and parking 10 or so min walk away which in torrential rain with luggage isn’t fun! However easy to park and discount code from hotel good. Easy to grab a bite to eat before heading off to concert and handy location. Nice room. Privilege room. Could do with coffee table - nothing to use when sitting on seats. Bed lovely size but too hard for us. Super bathroom tho.

We hadn’t stayed before and hadn’t realised that it was quite a small hotel, but for a two night stay it was fine. The rooms are adequate though there isn’t much space at all to unpack, no drawers and 4 hangers. It was very clean however. We didn’t have breakfast, but the bar, reception and breakfast area are all in one and pretty small. Our main issue was the heating. Since I’ve read the other reviews it’s seems it is a known problem, however the staff acted surprised when on the first morning I complained that I had been cold all night as the air con didn’t seem to heat up but even when we tried to turn it off the fan still blew. They said they’d have maintenance look and put a heater in the room. When we walked in after being out all day the room was hot and stuffy from the fan heater (I’m not sure how safe that is either!) again the air con fan was noisy all night but no heat so we had to keep turning the heater on and off. On check out I mentioned that it hadn’t been ideal having a fan constantly blowing out cool air then haven’t to override it with a fan heater, it was noisy and disrupted our sleep all weekend. Again they seemed surprised, even though we’d already told them the day before and just said they get maintenance to look at it. For this reason I don’t think we’d stay again, unfortunately these things affect a stay and knowing it has been an ongoing issue and not dealt with, feels somewhat misleading.

The Expedia listing stated that the hotel had onsite parking with a height restriction, which clearly implied that parking was available at the property. From checking in to checking out, all went smoothly and efficiently. Our room was clean and comfortable. The parking was Thistle parking (EH3 8BL), which is about a 5-minute walk from the hotel. The cost was £11. It closes around 11:30, so please be careful. I liked the hotel location because many offices surround it, quiet, and there are many independent cafes or restaurants. It is about a 10-15 min walk to the castle, close to all the beautiful historical attractions. There are many friendly and helpful multilingual employees as well. (we found at least Spanish and Japanese speakers!)

The staff were very friendly, from dealing with ad-hoc requests, to an efficient breakfast process. Water bottles in the room (and Scottish shortbread!) were replaced daily without charge, with daily room cleaning on offer. The location is also good, with a Tesco Local a one-minute walk and Haymarket Railway Station and tram stop around a 10 minute walk. There were a few marks on the carpet, but the hotel had new rolls of carpet ready to install, which I assume will replace the stained carpet.

I booked this as a special treat for my daughter’s birthday. On arriving in our room there were water marks all over the wall and areas that it had clearly been patched up but not decorated properly. There were also stains on the sheets. Our room was freezing so I was going to call reception but discovered no phone in the room so had to get dressed (was in my pyjamas) and go down to reception to ask for help. The lady on reception was very helpful and came up to help sort out the heating. The next morning I wanted to use the hairdryer. However, I soon discovered that was broken. I called reception using my mobile phone and they said they would send up a replacement. After waiting for nearly half an hour I gave up and went out with wet hair. Finally, on the last morning we flushed the toilet and water just get pouring into the toilet and it then wouldn’t flush. We were checking out anyway so I told the lady at reception and she was very apologetic and offered us a small discount. However, for the cost of around £300 for two nights I felt that the discount wasn’t very much. I would definitely think twice before booking another Mercury hotel.

I stayed here for one night on 15th April and it was, frankly, one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I’ve had. First, there was no WiFi available, according to the front dest due to a “technical glitch”, something the staff acknowledged but did nothing about. I was unable to join a critical work call with a client, was not only frustrating but professionally damaging. The room itself smelled musty and damp, which made the environment feel unclean and uncomfortable. When I raised these issues with staff, they were entirely unhelpful and disinterested, no offer to move rooms or even apologise meaningfully. To top it off, I discovered the shower was broken the next morning. The head was detached and unusable. I couldn’t even get a proper wash before checking out. This hotel failed on every basic level: connectivity, cleanliness, functionality, and service. For a chain like Mercure, this is completely unacceptable. I advise others to book elsewhere, especially if you need to work or expect a minimum standard of care and professionalism.

This was the worst stay for a business trip I’ve had & I have travel all over the world. Everything seemed fine when we arrived, hotel accepted our bags early but no room so we went to work, returned at 6pm & checked in. I had a really important meeting online so went to log in to my VPN & the reception had not told us how to log in so went to call & had a dead line on the phone, which is illegal I had mins until the meeting, went to reception & they said ‘no internet’, didn’t tell us at check in & had no emergency line for the phones. They said the firewall had an issue and that the internet would be on the following day. We were starving so asked to order room Service low&behold, no room service for dinner anywhere in the hotel as the chef was off on Mondays & no cover. We travelled 5am & they didn’t tell us. then they said order delivery. Went back to the room & my wife pulls back the bedsheets & there are lots of black hairs in the bed. Disgusting. We had to go down to reception & ask them to change the sheets, which they did reluctantly! Around the room, everything was falling off, towel holder, toilet seat was loose & toilet roll holder also loose. The next three days, we didn’t get back until late from work, still no internet, all excuses, no offer of a drink for the trouble, nothing, just ignorance & no customer service. The final day, they had a dongle internet that was only available at reception & 1st floor. We used 14.6gb data this week, charged. Refund asap

We were staying for a night out in town, when we went into the cupboard for the ironing board there was a dirty towel on the floor and receipts from another date and horrible dirty marks on the floor in front of the table. Shame as had great potential at first glance and staff were lovely.

Rooms are very cramped and was disappointed with amount of storage. If you are just staying for one night then not an issye, two of us stayed for three nights and found the lack of space uncomfortable. Staff friendly, hotel clean. Breakfast was good, my only issue was with the buffet area, no space to put your plate when lifting the lids to access the food, it was very awkward. No literature in hotel room about the city, no literature in reception/bar area. Catered more towards business guests than holidaymakers

I have stayed in this hotel for my past 3 out of 4 visits to Edinburgh. On each occasion the wifi has never worked, whether in foyer or bedroom. When discussed with the front desk, they insisted there wasn't a problem. Very disappointing. Didn't have breakfast or dinner in the hotel so I'm unable to comment.

Ever wondered what it would feel like to be buried alive and are you prepared to pay to find out? Then check in to Mercury Edinburgh Haymarket Hotel. My room was two floors below ground, with a tiny window where I could see a sliver of the sky if I angled my head steeply. There was no 4G connection to speak of this deep underground. To make it worse the WiFi was not working properly, because they had stupidly scheduled an upgrade just before the NYE holiday, when BT engineers were guaranteed to be on holiday and not able to come and fix it. I lost three days of work time. Finally the window wouldn’t close on the night that temperatures dropped below freezing and I was moved to a different room. This one was above ground, but at this stage I just wanted to check out and leave. I wouldn’t want to be back here even if I was dead. Avoid if you can.

The hotel was excellent. Comfortable. Clean. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. I had medication that needed refrigeration so they kept it for me and retrieved it for me every day so I could take my injection then returned it to the fridge. The last night they placed my gel pack in the freezer so I would be able to travel with my medication. They were all so nice about the inconvenience. I was so appreciative. It is hard to travel with medications that require such restrictions but they made it so easy for me

This was my third time staying at the hotel. It was my first anniversary celebrations and the hotel staff were amazing. They left a beautiful card, a sweet gift and sprinkled rose petals on the bed for the special occasion. Was a fabulous experience from beginning to end. The location is great. Nearest Car park is about 5mins away but the hotel have an arrangement so mine was £11 for overnight parking so not too bad for city centre! Hotel was lovely; staff very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was delicious. A bit expensive but probably just city centre prices. I would definitely stay here again.

Not worth the money paid. The room was nice. The breakfast wasn’t fully stocked. The kitchen stopped serving eggs and there was little hot food available. The staff were rude when we asked for eggs , staff were eating at the same time as guests in the restaurant. It’s not what you would expect for a hotel of this standard, it is in a good location but the walk from the car park and to princess street was very dark. I wouldn’t recommend for solo travelers
