We came here on a girls trip and the hotel was outstanding. Fantastic service, incredible spa, delicious restaurants and a beautiful rooftop pool. There are many shops and restaurants that are walkable as well. I’d stay here again in a heartbeat!

As a platinum vip with Expedia and a gold member with Marriott Bonvoy, this property exceeded my expectations. Our suite was medium in comparison to other suites but had a huge terrace that we could watch sunset from. Only valet parking which is typical for the area however it was 70 a night whereas other properties average 40-50 but no waiting and easy call ahead pick up. Bell service was on point and immediate as we entered our room When I booked room, vip gave free champagne but when we got there it wasn’t in the room and notified guest services - they brought a red wine which I rejected and asked for champagne - they obliged without hesitation (even though I checked my reservation and the actual booking stated “wine or champagne if available) … the bottle given was a veuve mid range about $110-$130 ish so not a bad deal at all. Place is clean and new Location is perfect - easy access to restaurant row / nightlife / beach and pier Room service is great and quick however expensive which I rarely say- 2 cokes and 2 breakfast burritos is $109 not including tip Overall a great hotel and would definitely stay again. Note: bonvoy was slightly cheaper by $10 but didn’t give the champagne so that’s why I booked Expedia. If I wasn’t vip, bonvoy would of been about 300 less, just an fyi

Beautiful property, great aesthetic. Restaurant is amazing. Small pool with a lengthy wait list (waited 2 hours to get a lounge chair). Asked for tea and a kettle, waited for an hour for a kettle and got a phone call in the morning asked when we needed the kettle. For how much we paid, didn’t live up to the hype.

Love the hotel room and common area. They have great morning coffee/tea set-up with a huge common space to start your morning. Walking distance to the beach and even closer to many restaurants and shopping. Great for a visit to Santa Monica beach.

The rooftop pool and lounge area is very unique and you can eat/drink there too. However, the area can be booked for private groups which prevents access to hotel guests. It happened to us and we were quite surprised. We chose the hotel specifically for the unique experience but it was closed for 1 day that we were there. The rooftop bar would benefit from a couple of TVs. There are lots of cool areas walking distance, however, like most other cities, there is a lot of homeless around the area.

Great hotel for adults. The staff is very accommodating and thoughtful. Super clean, quiet rooms. Highly recommend! The gym is really nice and has a Pilates reformer.

Amenities were great, bed comfortable, staff attentive. However, Leaving slightly Disappointed, I paid for a room with a balcony and had it facing an alleyway. The cleaners also left my balcony door unlocked and open all day.

The Proper is a newer nice clean place to stay in Santa Monica given how expensive all the hotels are in that area (it is expensive as well, given the room size). The rooms are small but nice. It can be quite loud on the Landmark side that is off Wilshire. Multiple sirens throughout the day can be heard as well as regular traffic. We had to wear earplugs at times. Our in-room Nespresso supplies were not replenished regularly. Be careful of in-room snacks-they are stupendously expensive (22.00 for M&M’s!!) The bath products are very nice there. Pretty rooftop bar and restaurant where you can watch the sunset. It is a popular spot and need to book reservations early. I’d probably stay there again while in Santa Monica, but stay in the Contemporary building (which can also be loud from the rooftop bar). Need to choose your room wisely. All the staff were friendly and helpful.

First thing I noticed was the table hadn’t been cleaned prior to my entry. Small room, uncomfortable mattress and inconvenient to get from main lobby to room. There was absolutely nothing special or anything to justify the cost. Thought I’d give it a try because I’d been to the rooftop bar before but live and learn.

The positives: -great design -great location- tucked away but central -excellent valet service -rooftop bar is a vibe and fun -great gym with new equipment The negatives: -front desk staff pretty aloof -housekeeping hit or miss -some days you get a bottle of water some days you don’t. Some days they emptied the trash some days they didn’t. Not the standard of 5 star hotel housekeeping which is typically unobtrusive. You pop out and by the time you pop back it’s magically been serviced. Not here. Unless you remember to put your do not disturb sign out the night before they will knock on your door at 8am every day when you’re getting dressed. -Labor strikes meant every morning at 7am we were woken by cars honking and bull horns. Left the Santa Monica Proper more tired than when I arrived.

For a room that charges over USD 500, the views are horrible. The views badly face motel looking parking lots and back alleys. The hotel also charged me an additional USD175 without prior notice. The reservation with Expedia never mentioned it.

The spa situation is quite odd and is actually detached from hotel, the price is not worth the spa environment. No steam no sauna no hot or cold plunges etc. They had some challenges I am sure being over capacity for the Lobby bar as the rooftop was closed due to rain. Sat us (2 people) than asked us to move so they can seat the DJ’s friends, no big deal we moved for them (compd bread) . Service was very poor, no one came to table for a hour, we had to ask manager to get service.. excuse was that they thought we didn’t want anything even though it was a dinner reservation.. comp one non-alc drink. Just very poor service and even response to the poor service. Hotel itself is nice just would pick somewhere else for a staycation with proper amenities and service

Everything was done with such sophistication and ease. We celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary and was my 3rd return/stay. Everyone took care of us- from Champagne and Fruit awaiting our room upon arrival, to complimentary coffe (Americana and a Mocha latte) brought to us in the lounge... just so much. Staff were on point- special shout out to Armando Campos and Daniela, along with Ivan the bartender @ La Palma... lovely service.

The hotel itself is stunning. However, its location in a less than desirable part of Santa Monica detracts from the experience. The service was the most significant disappointment. We repeatedly asked for water that never arrived, had issues with housekeeping removing and not returning robes, and experienced a privacy violation when a staff member entered our room despite being asked to come back later. Additionally, splitting the room charge was unnecessarily complicated, and my friend had to wake up at 5 am for a task that could have been done the night before. The commercialization of in-room products, all available for purchase, cheapened the luxury feel. Finally, the absence of turn-down service was surprising for a five-star hotel. The pool area was fine but overcrowded and overpriced, and the pool water was so warm it almost felt unsanitary. Overall, while the hotel’s design is impressive, the service and certain aspects of the experience did not meet five-star expectations.

The Proper Hotel is a beautiful hotel located in a great central location in Santa Monica. The beach is about a 7-10 minute walk, with easy access to great restaurants and shopping. All staff were wonderful and friendly. We stayed here with our kids and they loved the beautiful rooftop (heated) pool and in house restaurants. We would have definitely loved to stay longer!

Honestly, everything was just such a (great) vibe. The hotel ambiance/design isn't my particular aesthetic, but even I could appreciate the hotel concept's quality of execution, aesthetic cohesion, and so forth. Staff were *chef's kiss* from valet to reception, housekeeping, food/bar staff, etc. Quality of food in the Italian-centered main floor restaurant was lovely; rooftop California-centered food very good. Major props to the team when I realized at the airport that I had forgotten to pack some new purchases - they promptly retrieved the items from the room and had it on standby for my local friend to pick up. While location is a slight hike from the beachfront, it affords a quieter stay. The spa attached to PROPER SM was also top notch. Concerns about unhoused persons in the neighbourhood, for those from large cities like Toronto or NYC, you won't even register (locals seem to to believe it's become an issue - didn't notice it personally).

Staff were attentive, friendly, and very helpful. Palma is a great spot for casual food and to relax and work or catch up with friends. It's a lovely casual and comfortable lounge style restaurant/bar during the day. Food is good too. Calabra food is the best. Great rooftop spot for amazing food, great service, and good drinks. Make sure to book a reservation in advance. The hotel and rooms are beautiful, clean, and comfortable. It's further inland, but you are close to Montana street eats, snacks, and shopping.

We were very disappointed with our experience at the Proper Hotel. We called numerous times to ask when our room would be ready, but no one could provide a clear answer or meaningful update. The staff we spoke with were short and generally unhelpful, which only added to the frustration. Even reaching someone by phone was unnecessarily difficult, requiring several automated prompts before we could speak with a person. For a hotel at this price point and reputation, we expected a much higher level of communication, hospitality, and service. Unfortunately, the experience fell well short of those expectations.

Second stay here -Really love it. Was initially unhappy with the first room I was checked into and the staff obliged in finding me a more suitable room. Thanks to Irena! Pool is amazing and honestly why I came back. Only downside is the amount of children at the pool. Rooms are lush, beds are clouds!
