I recently enjoyed a fantastic weekend at the Macdonald Bath Spa. The hotel’s elegant atmosphere, combined with impeccable service, made for a delightful stay. Check in staff were confused about breakfast times, we were told hydrotherapy pool was out of use which was disappointing but then we found it open. Had problem with room safe which was not resolved. But most staff were charming and very helpful.

Lovely quality hotel with great attentive staff. Easy walking distance into Bath. So great location. The pool and spa area is looking a little tired. Some of the mosaic tiles are missing around the outside pool and because of this my hair was pulled a bit when it got caught in one of the gaps. Would be good if this is looked into

The hotel grounds are lovely and the building itself looks impressive. The pool area (inside and outside) is pretty tired and needs updating as well as better maintaining. It is lovely for the kids though as they also have all sorts of swimming toys out, which the children can use. The rooms are spacious (we stayed in 519) but the carpet looks pretty tired, too. The beds are comfy, the bathroom is fine. Some parts in the room as well as the breakfast room were very dusty. I could also spot a few hairs in the bahtroom (and on my bathrobe), which I did not like. Breakfast was rather poor for the price. They charge extra for a bit of avocdo or a bit of salmon, which I find inappropriate considering the rooms are over £250 per night. There is also an extra charge for anything other than the standard breakfast tea/ filter coffee.

Comfortable clean rooms, although our room overlooked the flat roofs of adjacent buildings. Spa pool and saunas were very nice and not too busy. We had a good breakfast, but the chef was unable to cook any simple pancakes for our daughter.

Details matter. I don’t know how this place is 5 star? Who reviews that? Because they need to take a look again. The whole place is so tired, including rooms, corridors, the pool and spa. My room had eroded paint work throughout, rust in the bathroom, musty smell, leaking AC on the wallpaper. Both the fridge and AC did not work and nobody came to fix after i complained. The noise throughout the first floor is horrendous, the doors all slam and can be heard all night and in the mornings - don’t expect a lie in or early night. The spa and pool have missing tiles everywhere, rust, water damage. The steam room actually smelled of drains. I think it’s quite embarrassing to be associated with that brand if customers are coming on the basis of 5 star which is all over the marketing. Feel sorry for the staff. The ultimate stickler is, given there is zero commitment to quality, they charge extortionate ‘5 star prices’ on breakfast, treatments, food and drink. For example a £10 tray charge for room service. I hope this is read before some poor person wants to treat their partner or celebrate something of significance because I’d be gutted if that happened to me. Luckily it was a one off stay; I was glad to come home even after two nights.

Lovely property with fab facilities and polite staff. Great location with only a 15 min walk to attractions in Bath. Level of cleanliness was less than expected of a 5* hotel. Communal areas were clean but often shabby, needing some new paint but rooms weren’t as clean as we’d have liked. Was clear they had just had a quick clean but skirting boards, back of toilet and bathroom corners were very dusty and hand-wash holder had lots of old hand-wash congealed on to it. Breakfast was nice but it was clear staff were stressed and people/items were forgotten for long periods of time and items like glasses, coffee pots and bowls weren’t always clean.

On the hottest day of the year I was placed in a room where the air conditioning was not working: fear not, they gave me a fan that looked as though it had not been dusted since the 80’s when the rickety thing was bought! But what detracted from the warm air circulated around the room by the noisy relic was the springy uncomfortable mattress…seemingly purchased in the same decade. The room was not clean: a previous occupier’s pills lay scattered on the floor…and they left the gift of a long strand of black hair in the shower. Generous. Was breakfast the redeeming feature? No! Over-cooked eggs, under cooked hash brown, and deep fried sausage. Nothing about this start to the day screamed “Happy Friday”, more like “get out whilst you can”. Which I did!

Hotel grounds – Absolutely beautiful, picturesque, and so calm and therapeutic. The gardens and surroundings really made us feel relaxed. Reception – Professional but quite robotic. There was no warmth or welcoming feeling; it just felt like a task being done. Sycamore Room – The views were stunning; we could see the lovely Bath landscape and hot air balloons from our suite, which was amazing. The Nespresso coffee station was delicious and well stocked, and we appreciated having a fan in the cupboard to use. However, the bathroom was extremely disappointing. The washpot had poop left under it from a previous guest, so we didn’t use it at all. The toilet seat behind had blood-like marks, so we had to raise it to use it, and the bath was dirty too. The whole bathroom furniture feels old, worn out, and unclean, which really doesn’t match how beautiful the actual room was. Also, for a room booked for three people, there should have been at least two bottles of still water provided. Spa – I wanted to book a massage treatment on the day we checked in, but they were fully booked. My advice is to book your spa treatments ahead of your stay to avoid disappointment. Breakfast – Lovely choices for hot food . We went at 7am, and no queue with full attention from the waiters. Checkout – Quick and easy, but again very robotic with no warmth or thank you. It was a nice touch that they left a handwritten birthday card and chocolate

Very disappointed. The spa was terrible. Dirty facilities, faulty steam rooms, cold pool and drinks all around outside hot tub. Room was dirty, bed uncomfortable and flies in room. Ordered room service- charged £10 extra to wait 40 mins for raw food. Had to return and wait another 40 mins. No refund. Nice from outside and location nice but this is definately not a 5 star. I stayed alone to relax for my son’s graduation and my trip was terrible compared to the usual 4 star hotels in the area. Definately not worth the spa. Outdoor thalassopy pool was warm but dirty unfortunately.

The hotel was run down definitely did not feel like a 5 star when we walked into the room. The room had a spiders on the wall, the air con wasnt working, the bathroom and windows were cracked, paint was peeling. We then had to move rooms due to the air con not working, we then ordered room service and it arrived at our door when we told reception that we would come and collect it. However the customer service was very good and they helped us with all the issues we experienced. The breakfast quantity for a £26 meal was unsatisfactory the portions were very small, we also had to wait 10 mins before we could sit down for breakfast and no one came over to apologise or say that we will be with you soon, i think your staff are overworked and should be recognised for their patience in helping unhappy customers.

I’ve given 3* because of a few things. It’s extremely short staffed. The staff that are there though in the breakfast room and reception are very good trying to keep up. The rooms and the spa need a refurbishment. A little bit dirty, My mattress topper had a huge stain when I pulled the sheets back. The lounge areas, reception and outside space is beautiful and I love the grandeur. I’ve stayed here many times in the past, but it just feels like it lacks some sort of management. I understand it’s probably not affordable to refurbish the place but maybe room by room doing a paint job would help.

I booked a deluxe double room with a garden view and when I checked in they had no rooms available. I did book about 3 hours prior to arrival. We were upgraded to a suite. One of the pillow cases was heavily stained and whilst pulling the duvet back the bed sheet slipped down and revealed a mattress protector which was so old it was falling apart. We also discovered that the duvet was a mattress topper with corner straps and not a duvet!! Not really what you would expect from a 5 star hotel suite. The room and bathroom was tired and in need of some modernisation.

Nice location but the room smells so bad with old furniture. First we got the room in partial basement then the hotel was able to find the room at the first floor. That room had mold smell looks like they did not open this room long time. Pool is small and crowding. Massage /SPA not able to sign for two days. All was booked. Food was ok but better to eat outside. The hotel does not match 5 stars.

Overall we had a nice stay and enjoyed relaxing in the pools. But the property is in need of substantial investment. Our bathroom sink was smashed. Decor is old and dated. We had dust on our coffee cups. Also things like only providing one small in-room bottle of water for 2 adults is pretty stingy! Got charged 10% service charge when buying a bottle of wine from the bar when the service was terrible! I feel like I’m being miserable but this is far from a 5 star hotel. But it didn’t spoil our couple of days in Bath.

This is a lovely hotel with great facilities. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable. However the breakfast experience lets them down. They do not have enough staff to support the number of guests staying at the hotel. Food on the buffet options is not replenished during the sitting so runs out quickly. It takes a longtime to get coffee/ tea/ toast/ service at the table. The dining room is lovely but overshadowed by lack of staff. The staff that are there are trying their best but there are just not enough of them. Equally finding staff in the lounge area to order drinks/pay for drinks is challenging, which lets the experience of staying at this hotel down. This is why I have only given it 4 stars not 5.

The property is situated in a really good location to visit bath the old part of the property is very beautiful and the courtyard with music works well, but when it comes to staffing the hotel has real problems, not enough staff not trained staff and management not really managing this is from all departments from reception to room service even the bar and restaurant hopefully the hotel can improve with its staffing as this is the only letdown

The reception service was great but the bar/terrace service was dreadful dirty tables with left over plates and glasses and we were not spoken to for over 20 mins and even when they did come they did not clean the table or take the order just said will come back in 5 so after waiting another 10 mins we left and took drinks in town

The location of the hotel and hotel itself were good but a few experiences during our stay lowered the rating. Firstly received a WhatsApp message directly from the hotel on the day of arrival saying check in was from 3. Arrived a 3 for check in to be told the room wasn't ready and the room would be ready until 3:30, I was told the hotel was busy thus causing the delay. Don't send a message the day before then saying 3. When we came back to check in at 3:30 the queue was 20 minutes long to check in. Not a good start. Room was a good size, but a big crack in the sink. Also opened the window but would close again. Spa facilities were good. Breakfast was ridiculous waited in a long queue. Eventually seated and then waited 45 minutes to be served a very average breakfast. Toast never arrived. Continental breakfast was very poor with no bread to go with cheese and meats. It was the same at every table. On check staff did not even ask how our stay was.

For the price charged this hotel really needs to up it\'s level of service. We stayed for 2 nights, to visit the Christmas market and celebrate my wife\'s 60th birthday. We arrived 30 mins before check-in time, greeted politely and then just told to "come back at 3.30", no suggestions of where we could wait, so we waited in reception and saw three more people arrive, check-in and given their rooms immediately! When we were given our room, there was no explanation as to the facilities, or where they were. There is a spa here and that wasn\'t mentioned. Our room was not serviced after the first night, someone from housekeeping knocked on our door in the early evening asking if our room had been serviced and if not, would we like it serviced now, we declined. We dined in the restaurant Sunday evening. The food was good, although service was slow. We were asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu and we said yes, but then we were forgotten and I had to go and ask again. After ordering, one of the desserts was incorrect. When corrected it came back without the ice cream! The cheese was served straight from the fridge, so was chilled and lacked flavour. All minor points, but too many for a hotel that strives to a 5 star standard.

The hotel is a grand building and in beautiful grounds however inside, a little tired perhaps fair to say. Room was a decent standard and Spa facilities are overall pretty good with inside and outdoor pools. However... the hotel is desperately understaffed, this is really noticed in the dining room. After sitting down for dinner it took nearly 30 mins to get a drink mainly given much attention being paid to a large birthday party in the restaurant. We opted to walk in to town to have dinner elsewhere. Breakfast was even more so shambolic, tables just left with partly eaten food all over the dining room, food came out at different times, lots of other guests complaining bread was of burger van quality at best.

Mixed review on service... 1st day we arrived and ordered room service, they tried to hide a £10 service charge, they removed it after we complained so be careful. Apart from that, the services we got from the waiters and waitresses was fantastic... we came for a wedding so don't know if the service we got from those really lovely waiting gang was a one off, I hope not. Lovely gardens and great car park close to reception too.

A beautiful hotel. The room was lovely, everything was very clean, the pool and spa area were great (we even used the outdoor pool as it was heated!) and the staff were all friendly and very helpful. It was about a 15 minute walk into the very centre of Bath through a nice park and less than 5 minutes in a taxi which we got in the evening. Would definitely recommend.

The staff were friendly and the hotel is well kept. It is situated on a hill and offers a quiet place to relax after a busy day. It is close to the Kennet and Avon canal, Sydney Gardens and it’s a pleasant walk into city along Great Pulteney Street and over Pulteney Bridge. Unlike most city centre hotels it does have a car park.

What a fantastic Hotel this is, set in a beautiful hill side location with only a 10 minute walk in to Baths city centre. The staff at the hotel are amazing, always kind, friendly and efficient. We always pay a little bit more to have a garden view and wake up with the sun shining on our balcony. The food is excellent too. The full English breakfast is highly recommended and served in a beautiful room with grand pillars and doors that open out on to a terrace. The same with the evening meals too. We would especially like to thank the manager again for such good service at breakfast and also Gaille in reception who’s always exceptional. We can’t wait to visit again…

Lovely hotel close to the city centre but with easy parking at no extra cost. The walk into the city is very pretty but is uphill on the way back. Chose to not have breakfast at the hotel. Room was lovely and staff very friendly and helpful. We had an issue with our room but it was sorted with minimum fuss and inconvenience to us. We would stay again.

Let down by poor breakfast options, additional surcharge for half of the items on menu (including drinks) and extremely slow service (27 minutes to get a coffee!) both mornings. Embarrassingly small portions and poor quality breakfast. Not sure how it was “award winning”. Poor check in experience also - we weren’t told to register our vehicle to avoid a fine. Nor were we shown to our room but told to simply “walk through the restaurant” and ended up getting quite lost in the rain.

A fantastic stay. Great location for the exciting city of Bath, all aspects of our stay were exceptional, except one. The evening meal was overpriced. It is routine to pay such prices at really top quality restaurants, but the food was good, but no more. The image of excellence was attempted by use of ridiculously small portions. We dined in the hotel one night only. The room was superb, location fantastic, and a professional service throughout. Breakfast very good too. Thank you.

My only complaint would be that the evening dining menu was pretty limited. But the restaurant staff were attentive and excellent. A couple of simple items added to the menu wouldn't go amiss alongside the fine dining.

The pool was lovely, the bar staff good however the quality of fish and chips with mushy peas was pretty abysmal, managed tpo pull the whole jar of peas out in one go, by the time it had gone back to be basically microwaved to death and stirred I had eaten my way through most of the small fish and chips. House wine at 11.50 a glass was a tad overpriced however it tasted ok. Staff were attentive

Breakfast was even more so shambolic, tables just left with partly eaten food all over the dining room, food came out at different times, lots of other guests complaining bread was of burger van quality at best.

As you enter the hotel you get a feeling of grandeur, in all the hotel is very well kept up thou may be a bit cold in places due to the lack of heating. The spa is looking a bit run down from are previous visit. We did not eat in the evening at the restaurant as walked in to bath ,but had breakfast which for £26 is probably the worst breakfast i have had for the money not much choice at the continental and the cooked consisted of one very small mushroom ,bacon, that you could snap small sausage undescribed ,a egg and what I can say is almost a thimball of baked beans i will not be returning to this hotel
