Mercure Oxford Eastgate Hotel

Awful room. Extremely hot. There were 2 fans but still it was so hot and stuffy could not sleep. Veronica the manager was not sympathetic at all. Just said sorry. It’s obvious an issue they have all the time - one member of staff told me but management fail to do anything and just have complaints from the customers from rooms without aircon ( half the rooms do). I’d completely avoid as I had no sleep and management don’t care.

Well situated in City Centre for walking and exploring. However, neither hotel or city is car friendly with it being virtually impossible to take car from recommended car park to hotel, due to one way system which even TomTom could not master! Hotel parking very small area, expensive, and non condusive to access and return ( car keys had to be left with reception in case they needed to move cars to let other users out). Bathroom superb, room well appointed if a little old fashioned ( but in line with City character). 2 attempts to get hotel staff to replace bedroom light bulbs went unheeded. Unreliable bar with only 1 gin on offer at times, and restriction to serving just beer and wine in evening seemingly at the whim of staff/management. Hotel not particularly easy for disabled access and manoeuvre.

It's not exactly an Arthritis Friendly Hotel, as there is no lift. When our old bones finally made it up the stairs to our room, it was OK. The breakfast service was not up to standard with stone cold fried eggs, undercooked bacon, lukewarm coffee and no marmalade for the toast. There was also no operational bar,The main plus for this hotel is its location. I've read the 'spin', but they need to 'up their game' and improve the standards. There is obviously a Training Deficit here that needs to be addressed.

The air-conditioning in the room was good for the Summer. But no lift was very difficulty to bring the luggage up n down when move in and out the hotel. It has room cleaning every day to clear the rubbish bin, change towels n tidy up the bed but didn’t clean up the tables.

Room has not had AC for a while and the hotel knowingly and with premeditation still went ahead and sold it to us. We had to leave the hotel earlier due to the intense summer heat and asked for one night refund. Nor Expedia, neither the hotel resolved the issue. I do not recommend to stay in this hotel. Please check travel advisor reviews.

Car park was awful. Trying to get in and out and staff have to take your key and details in case it needed to be moved to get another guest out. I wasn’t happy with this and the staff seemed unsure who would move it and if they would be insured. Given how small and bad the car park was I needed more reassurance and details. When I checked in I wasn’t asked if I’d parked in the car park and wasn’t aware I had to at the time. I sat on the terrace over looking at the car park and I saw a member of staff come out look at my number plate and say to another guest he would find out who it was and them to move it as he was checking out. If I had have gone shopping or out this guest would have been blocked in by me and unable to leave when planned. Obviously I went and discussed with staff and moved. But future guests should be made more aware of the situation and staff need to advise guests and be able to advise. All of the above for the cost of £30 per night!!

Paper thin walls - so very noisy, especially when next door arrives at 2:30am and has an hour long conversation on speakerphone. The bar was also trying to close at 21:30 ! However the room was clean but dated with a rotting bathroom door. You expect more from a fairly pricey hotel.

Appreciate it's an old building but it is not very mobility friendly. First room offered was in the newer building at the back and was very dark and not very nice - looked nothing like the options on the website for that room grade. Second room option was better but not sure why I was given a room on the top floor which was not easily accessible (lift only goes to the 2nd floor). Check-in was not very efficient (quite slow and I wasn't given the key to the second room before returning the first key). On check-out the bags were left in the main lobby by the lift which was not very secure. Staff in the restaurant served a drink on the Sunday evening but were setting up for breakfast which did not feel very welcoming.

Smell of drains was rather unpleasant.

I was very impressed with the staff. Friendly and professional. However, everything that came out of the kitchen was cold. Coffee or burger etc. COLD. Not warm. Cold. Also the banisters and handrails going up to the room, black with dirt. I don’t think they have ever been wiped down. Carpets were clean but the hoover stored on the landing. Pack it away. I don’t want to feel like I’m entering dorm rooms on campus. Bathrooms clean. Room a bit small for a twin but ok. Would be useful to have a mirror any place where the hairdryer can reach.

The room we got was run down (felt unclean, and the glasses provided were dirty) and extremely hot. There was stairs to get to the room and the AC did not work, and the refrigerator did not get cold at all. We left early and they wouldn’t reimburse us the remaining fee. I would not stay here again. Also if you are driving a car, I would recommend to not stay at this hotel. The students line up for exams right out the front door and there is noise and activity all around the entrance for the earlier portion of the day. The staff is not helpful with parking.

A bit of a walk from city centre. The size of the room is decent and very clean. However, there is smell coming from the bathroom when coming in. It was very clean though. Luckily we can open the windows, doesn’t feel claustrophobic. A bit of a noise from the road and buses, but it was nice looking outside rather than having a window looking at a wall of the next building. I had a good sleep. A big tv and a portable fan/heater provided.

This is almost a self serve hotel. Skeleton staff. Empty beer and hard liquor bottles were always in the third floor hallway. Even when we complained repeatedly about this the bottles remained. Front desk told us they pick them up after midnight. Really they claimed the bottles came from the rooms. So they put them in hallway when cleaning at 10 am and they stay there, along with pizza boxes until midnight shift??? Be aware that although there is an elevator to second floor, there is a full flight of narrow stairs from floor 2 to floor three. Tough carrying suitcases! The hallways were not clean like they used to be. The rooms are never vacuumed in 5 days, the glasses and dirty mugs were never cleaned or replaced . We asked specifically about this they apologized but Never did they do anything. Staff is indifferent and won’t get up to do anything! Because of the hotels hygiene, we never ate a single meal there . We stayed here in last when the Okd Bank was full and Mercury used to be nice. No longer. We will never return! It is run like a cheap motel!

Great location at the very edge of the city centre. The hotel is clean & comfortable, but decoratively, a little jaded.

Hotel was well located. Rooms wee clean but not very clean as a few marks in bathroom. Could hear the next rooms TV and could hear every move from the room above us. Lots of choice at breakfast, although quality of food not the best. Staff were friendly and helpful. Overall a nice stay, but not amazing.

Great central location, good beds and helpful staff. But our room was really hot. Air-conditioning didn’t work and windows only opened a tiny bit. They gave us a drinks voucher to apologise but we had plans to go out, so a refund would have been better. They also gave us a room fan but this didn’t balance upright and was noisy, so we had an uncomfortable sleep. Bedroom and bathroom were well kitted out but mould on bathroom ceiling and around old window frames needs looking at.

The rooms were large and spacious. Some bathrooms are larger than others in terms of showers. The rooms are hot in the summer but fans are provided. Great location and very walkable to all tourist highlights. I would stay again!

The location was excellent and central near the colleges and High Street and Botanical Gardens. Unfortunately the room we stayed in, overlooking Merton Lane was noisy with a constant loud electrical noise which persisted all night preventing any sleep.

Excellent location. Small but adequate room. Did not sleep well either night: room was too hot especially with very warm douvet as only cover and none of 4 pillows soft enough.

It was a disappointing room, in the basement. It was cold, wifi was intermittent, and the toilet dripped constantly. It felt like the last room the hotel might use. And it cost £215. Value for money was terrible.

Hotel was nice enough and was in a great location. Staff were friendly. Room (801) was a good size and well furnished. Only downside was that there was lots of noise from the room above ours throughout our stay - just people walking around but it was very noisy and persistant. I don't think it was another bedroom, but we couldn't pinpoint where the noise was coming from.

The Staff on reception were clearly new and not experienced or trained - resulting in a very slow process and my payment being taken twice. Which was resolved and I was refunded. My room was very small - and the shower was almost too small to get washed in!!!

The reception are kind and nice. The room condition is moderate. The only thing I am still in trouble is that they dont give me a digital receipt. I have asked for it twice using the chat system but never reply me back. I hope they see this and would take a needed action accordingly.

Staff were excellent. We had a minor issue with the room (faulty air con) they very quickly upgraded our room.

We have left behind a few things, including Micheal Kors sweatshirt in our room. We have spent a day in Oxford after checkin out. Before leaving Oxford we remembered that we have left them in our room and we reported that to the hotel. Staff at reception checked lost properties but they could not be found. Subsequently we rang the hotel and talked to duty mangers on four different occasions. Our lost property was not found. The property manger has never rang back in spite promising to investigate this with housekeeping manger/staff. It was extremely disappointing that this happened. The room on the 3rd floor was extremely small and things could not simply disappear. The room was very much overpriced! The bed 'on wheels' was moving, a space in the wardrobe was so short that a regular coat could not fit in. Breakfast was of poor quality. However, the location is fantastic. This historic hotel used to have an excellent reputation so it's shame that this has changed so much.

Great twin room, courteous staff and overall great service. Also, considering the central location, it is lovely and quiet.

OK stay ruined by poor customer service. I accidentally left a remote control at the hotel and despite a simple request to pop it in the post, the hotel declined to do that one simple thing. I won’t be staying again.

Excellent location in the centre of Oxford , all sites walkable

Incredibly convenient location near the Magdalen Bridge. We arrived via Oxford Tube bus from London and it stopped less than 100 yards from the hotel. Oxford itself is easily walkable and this location is near several colleges as well as a beautiful park with a 2.5 mile walk along the rivers.

Great, central location. My room had a lovely view of Merton College.

Nice located hotel for the centre of the city near the Radcliffe Camera and also easy walk over to the shops. Very comfy bed as well

Great city centre hotel. No parking but park & ride is quick and convenient.

Delicious breakfast. Close to the sites we wanted to visit. We didn’t rent a car so we appreciated the convenience of the train.

Well located in Oxford, not too far from parking or the city

The hotel room was ok, the bed comfortable. The staff on reception were welcoming and performed well. But the dining room was chaotic. We ordered coffee and peppermint tea - apparently the hotel had no decaf coffee in either the rooms or the dining room. It took 15 mins plus a couple of reminders before it arrived at our table. We ordered breakfast and after 50 minutes waiting we walked out and told the staff to cancel it we could not wait an hour for breakfast. Other tables were repeatedly brought the wrong food and plates were going back and fore to the kitchen. We felt sorry for the young staff who were overwhelmed and there was clearly a management failure to render the breakfast session so poor and chaotic.

Don't stay here unless you really need to. The room wasn't cleaned properly and the performance of the staff was shoddy. We gave up waiting for breakfast after about 30 minutes and went elsewhere.

Rooms need a refresh. Bathroom windows would not open so mild in bathroom. Coffee at breakfast was low quality.

The Mecure Eastgate has the curb appeal, a beautiful builing in a beautiful area. The hitel itself is modern and clean. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and modern, however the tv did not work, one lamp did not work and the other was linked the the main room light. There was also no tea in the drink making facility. Dining as a person with coeliac disease was a problem. Despite emailing to check they could accommodate Gluten Free. On arrival at the prebooked & paid for diner I was told they only had 1 starter and 1 main that could be GF, and they had run out of the main meal. The manager came and offered a complementary drink, however that was expected to replace the main meal! We walked up the road to The Ivy instead and had a wonderful meal. Front desk were very apologetic and refunded the main meal and credited the breakfast too as a gesture of goodwill.

I\'d not recommend it. The pros: nice, comfortable and clean room. Good toiletries. Cons: terrible service, awful breakfast. This is supposed to be a "better" hotel in Oxford. A couple of things were pretty bad. The first one is when we arrived for breakfast and we\'re asked if we\'d like some coffee. I asked for a latte, as I always do, and was immediately informed that costed extra (even though I already paid for the meal). You can have coffee with milk, but you pay £3 a cup for some froth. I\'ve stayed in many hotels in my life, but I\'ve never been charged extra for a latte. As petty as it gets. The staff in the restaurant and reception were awful. I also paid for late check-out and, when we returned to the hotel to collect our bags, we were locked outside our bedroom. I went to reception and shower the email from the general manager confirming my late checkout. The lady in reception said she wasn\'t aware of it and my card failed, so she locked us out. I booked this hotel ages ago and the card I used for it expired. Instead of asking me for a new card ASAP, they locked us out! Again, I\'ve never experienced anything like that before. Needless to say, I offered another card straight away. But I had zero apologies from staff. I\'m definitely not returning. People seriously need to learn some manners in this place.

This was a lovely stay. The concierge was amazing in helping us, the room was clean and comfortable with … AIR CONDITIONING (lol). Breakfast was an amazing buffet. Very conveniently located. Would 100% stay here again.

This was a great hotel - clean and convenient. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We had the breakfast option and it was perfect with plenty of options. We stayed here for the Silverstone race weekend and getting to and from the track was easy visit the Oxford Pkwy park and ride. Would recommend and would stay again. Thank you!

Very centrally located. Clean and comfortable with nicely renovated bathroom. No airconditioning but the temperature was fine for me in September. The breakfast buffet was delicious
