We stayed at the Mercure Oxford Hawkwell House Hotel as a couple from 8–12 December, booking a Premium Room for a short festive break. Unfortunately, the stay didn’t quite live up to expectations. Our first room was located near the bar and restaurant and was very noisy, particularly in the evenings. To the hotel’s credit, we were moved to another room, but this was still affected by noise from other guests and conference attendees, so peace and quiet remained elusive. Parking was another downside. Spaces are limited and it was often difficult to find somewhere to leave the car, which added unnecessary hassle. We ate in the hotel restaurant during our stay and found the service to be patchy. The food itself was average and felt overpriced for what was offered. Expect to pay at least £40 per person for a two-course meal with a single drink, which didn’t feel especially good value. On the positive side, the location is convenient for visiting Oxford. The nearby Park & Ride is easy to use and a sensible way to avoid the recently introduced congestion charges. Overall, we wouldn’t choose to stay here again. The hotel feels very much geared towards business travellers and conferences rather than couples looking for a relaxed or festive short break.
