Loved the hotels esthetic. The room was clean and the staff super friendly. Every one of them at the front desk. Parking was so easy to get. The only thing I was bummed about was the exercise room. If it had weights and treadmill it would have been perfect. I chose the hotel partially for that reason. The room we got was a bit noisy but that was more the guests fault. Overall would book again. Loved its location too. Walking distance to Fisherman’s Wharf.

Beautiful old building great service and staff. Gym is really a small room with 3 machines and not very useable in the basement without windows. Hot tub is on first come first serve basis and limited with a key. Good for an interesting stay but not for longer visits.

I stayed for 6 nights and this spot met all my needs. Not a ton of amenities (but they did have a hot tub!) but it's so walkable right downtown on Alvarado street. Weekend nights were noisy, but overall it's a good value for the price and location. Street parking or public garage parking was easy - no need to pay for valet.

When I selected this hotel, I thought it was a bit closer to Cannery Row but that is my fault and certainly not the hotels. The historic nature of the property is not well played. There is a lot of period furniture and such but some aspects feel very dated and are in average to poor condition. There is no elevator in one of the buildings. The check in desk is down several stairs when dropping your car off. Luckily the elevator is near that entrance but it would be better if it was signed and you didn't move all your stuff down there to just have to drag it back up. Some staff members were warm and personable (car valet) and others less so (Front Desk at check in). Room was OK. The bathroom was not nice -- it was clean but the for example the vanity was VERY low as was the toilet.

Our stay was great- it’s in the middle of everything, it’s less expensive than many other hotels in the area, it was easy to travel with our dogs (we used one of the local doggie daycare places for a few hours while we were off adventuring), parking is close & easy, and the room was comfy.

This hotel has lots of character and antique charm. It’s located walking distance to the wharf and lots of food nearby. The staff was all super friendly and cheerful. The topper on the cake was that they are also dog friendly!

A little get away trip off the cuff, landed us in this quaint & beautifully furnished hotel. The staff was very helpful & valet parking is needed. There is a handicap lift avaiable inside the hotel where there are a few stairs. Very Walkable neighborhood & on Tuesday evenings, there's a wonderful farmers market right outside the door! Loved it. Great little street that offers food & convenience options. The hotel only serves coffee, tea & hot chocolate. A great surprise was a private jacuzzi you can sign up for by the hour. It's first come first serve & there are cameras to prevent couples from using it for other purposes. Transportation on a free shuttle that takes you to the cannery..just a great place to stay!

Nothing about this place is worth a visit. It is extremely dirty; you would think it was abandoned. Carpet is moldy and stained. It’s a maze to get to your room. I killed a handful of bugs in a short time I was there. Spider webs on windows and corners. Bed had no integrity. Room is stuffy. Parking is trash. Run. Ended up leaving with no refund and booking Marriott across the street. It was so awful I didn’t even care how much Marriott was and that I was losing money on Monterey Hotel.

Hi there, the front desk staff were friendly. The carpet was extremely dirty, the room wasn't clean, the light coming in from around the door was shinning on my face all night, the tv was difficult to use and the mold in the bathroom shower needs to be cleaned. The stay was not worth the money I spent.

The carpets in the room were stained, the comforter on the bed had bleach stains on it, the towels were rough and thin (almost falling apart). The bathroom was tiny, even for me (a 5'0" woman) and there was NO vanity so it was very difficultt to get ready in the mornings. The shower head had scum on it and the water pressure was non-existent. One of the outlets wouldn't even hold my charging brick for my phone (it just fell out of the wall). My room key de-magnetized twice during my stay which was incredibly inconvenient, but thankfully the staff were helpful and very nice. The deadbolt on my door wouldn't close unless I physically pulled the door up (not that easy for a small woman, but that's what the doorman himself told me to do). My room had 2 windows which looked directly into another guest's room so I had to keep the blinds closed the entire time. I dislike that the hangers aren't actual hangers that came off the closet, so I couldn't hang my attire anywhere else. The only reason I even gave it more than 1 star is because my heat worked and the whole town lost power during my stay but our power stayed on. And no, I shouldn't have to book a "deluxe" room to have a decent room. The hotel is 120 years old and felt every bit of its age.

Although the motel is historic, it could really use some upkeep. There was mold on the ceiling in our bathroom and we could hardly breathe when we took a shower. The toilet took 3 flushes, and was so very loud it would wake up anyone. The location is excellent though and the staff was very friendly. It may benefit them to offer breakfast.

The carpet is long past its lifespan. It was filthy, stained and obviously not vacuumed for a significant period of time. I took photos. When I put my shoe on, a cloud of dust came out of the carpet but there was visible dirt on top of the carpet through the place. There was a brown widow spider in the bathtub which the staff took care of and there were no cobwebs, but this property needs to be maintained.

Monterey Hotel is in a perfect location right near the Fisherman’s wharf, and on a Main Street. It is a very safe location. There’s two sides, the historic side and the more updated side. Unfortunately it was a full house and we were on the historic side which just could use a bit sprucing up. The room was clean and bathroom perfect, but the mattress needed to be replaced (a few years ago). We enjoyed our stay and would return here, just next time we will book in advance so that we can request the updated side.

Carpets all need to be cleaned. The whole hotel and the “historic” room I stayed in was run down. Not the charming old, but run-down old where the light fixtures are falling off the wall and the wall outlets cannot hold a plug in place. Old and run down fixtures as well.

Amazingly convenient in the heart of downtown. 6 min walk to the wharf, lots of eateries and shopping. Friendly reception, comfy bed, clean. A very pleasant stay. Thing to note is that this is a historic hotel and rooms may be smaller than you might expect. If you want space to sprawl out, you might want to check their suites rooms.

I was intrigued by the history but was disappointed in how loud and tiny my room was. Don't get a single queen room was like 12' x10'. Bathroom was decent sized but this hotel is definitely old and shows.

This is a very noisy place to stay. Windows barely kept out noise (street, seagulls, etc). We stayed on the 4th floor in the historic section and there was a skylight in the bathroom where the seagulls hung out and called all night long which echoed down the skylight. Slept horribly because of the noise. Bring ear plugs to sleep. Bed was okay. Could hear person in a different room snoring. Not very sound proof.

Great location, room was a little small. Walking distance to most activities. Downside on comfort, no AC. Room was humid and hot even with fan blowing at the window 24/7. Glad it wasn’t summer time, would’ve found another hotel if it wasn’t mid-October and cooler temperatures. Other than that, top notch service and location

Nice, older hotel but a few issues during our 3 night stay. The hotel has thin walls, and it wasn't anywhere near full, yet the staff booked other guests in the room next to ours and above ours every night. Lots of noise. We could not access Wifi when we checked in. After notifying the staff, we heard nothing back and never got access in the hotel. A good place but the staff needs to be more proactive given the age of facilities.

The only good thing was the location. Rooms very basic and lack of technology. We stayed in a room for handicapped people, because it was the only option between 6 that they showed us, that one was the most decent of all of them. It had just the bed, 2 night stands and the TV, only one heavy curtain was covering the window and we had to keep it close for privacy because the windows from the building next door was very close. Lack of lighting in the shower and besides we was to pay $20 extra per night for bed upgrade. Terrible experience. Never come back.

Customer service at both check in and check out were outstanding. We had three rooms for six people. The rooms were clean. Our room was very warm. We opened the window and had to use the oscillating fan to cool the room. There is no air conditioning or thermostat to control temperature. My sister went down to lobby to get a new set of key; still did not work. We called downstairs and bellman came up to help. He, too, was unable to open the room. He tried again, this time shoving his shoulder into the door. It still did not open. He then said he would have to call a locksmith. My sister and her friend ended up waiting in our room. We received a call that it was going to take longer. I asked if they could be accommodated in another room; I was told there were no other rooms available. After 1.5 -2 hrs. Wait, my sister checked her room. The locksmiths made entry in their room through the window. They insinuated the my sister was at fault for breaking the door. She at no time touched the door, other than to try her key. To sum everything, the employees both at the desk and those in the room were very rude. I would not recommend this hotel. It has a great location, but not worth the inconvenience and rudeness we were put through.

The person at the check in had poor customer service with the two customers in front of me and the supervisor came out to help and checked me in. They tried to charge a current guest who was extending his stay another deposit fee. Then when the customer left the desk the employee ignored us standing in the line, the customer in front of me had to ask if we could check in after a couple of minutes of waiting to be called forward. The employee said she was waiting for a customer to return but could help us while they waited. There is a parking garage about a block away you can park in for free from 6pm to 9am. If you are just staying overnight that is a great option. Valet parking is $30. I didn’t see anyone for valet on the side of the hotel we pulled up so I drove around to the other side and there was no on there. When I called the front desk they said to parking in the 3 minute loading zone and check in. They will get your keys at check in and valet your car. I just used the free garage instead. The two rooms we had were in the historical portion of the hotel. You can take the elevator up to your floor but then we had to go outside to cross over to our building and there were about 5 stairs we had to use. If you need an accessible room be sure to avoid the historical rooms. The rooms were clean and comfortable. They offer coffee in the lobby in the morning. Checkout went much smoother than checkin.

This is a charming hotel but our room faced directly onto Alvarado and that was a PROBLEM. It was extremely loud at 7pm and I told the front desk we were not comfortable. We are 60, not 22 so we were miserable because their windows are vintage so there is no soundproofing. The noise from the bars and restaurants lasted until 2 am. I doubt we will go back because it is too noisy.

Great location with easy free Trolley service, 2.5 blocks from Starbucks and fine dining Cibo(fabulous). Since valet parking is $30/daily, I used the wonderful trolley to get around. Staff was very welcoming and polite. The only downside, for me, was the super early morning (5:40a, 6:30a 2nd morning)loud noises…construction? housekeeping moving all kinds of furniture? I really enjoyed how close it was to everything I wanted to see.

I am over 70. Walked to the Monterey Hotel in the dark from the transit station about 4-6 blocks away with a rolling suitcase. People on the street were kind and helpful. Felt PERFECTLY safe and sound. Amazing for a downtown environment! Lost my phone on the train. The people at the Monterey Hotel gave me Amtrak's number, and took messages for me from my family for 2 days. So if you are like me, online, looking for a safe great place to stay for a reasonable price, this is your place. Nice coffee and fruit set up in the morning. The only noise I heard were the seagulls squawking in the morning! The lady at the desk gave me a wonderful recommendation for a breakfast place, and directions for public transportation. Went to Lover's Point and Cannery Row for the day, and had a marvelous town. Monterey is an awesome place to visit with kind, helpful and courteous service people from the bus drivers to the restaurants, tourist places, and hotel. Also you had to request a change of towels and trash collection or no one would come, Parking was $30 per night or you had to sort yourself out on the street or in the municipal parking lots. I have been traveling for over 50 years and this was by far the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed at! Upon check-in, the lady in the front desk gave us cards to our room that didn’t work, so we had to go back-and-forth down the stairs, eight times until we got one card that worked. She made us wait in line every time we had to get a new card? When we got into the room, it was 88° with no ventilation or circulation since we were facing the inside of the building. I went downstairs and asked for some circulating fans. The guy said that he was going to bring one up and he never did…. We waited until 1 AM to go back into the room because it was so uncomfortable. We got up at 5 AM because we couldn’t sleep with all the noise and uncomfortable high temperature. My wife and I were so mad that we stayed in this filthy, noisy, hot and stuffy room that we paid several hundred dollars for?! You advertise continental breakfast so when we went down there to ask about it. They said no we only have granola bars and apples. That is not a continental breakfast and I don’t even see any granola bars. The ladies said that they were out of them?!!! We go upstairs to take a shower and my wife slips because there’s no padding in the bathtub and tore the ligament in her wrist, now she’s in a sling for at least a month and hopefully we don’t have surgery! This hotel should be condemned!

Although the motel is historic, it could really use some upkeep. There was mold on the ceiling in our bathroom and we could hardly breathe when we took a shower. The toilet took 3 flushes, and was so very loud it would wake up anyone. The location is excellent though and the staff was very friendly. It may benefit them to offer breakfast.

A little get away trip off the cuff, landed us in this quaint & beautifully furnished hotel. The staff was very helpful & valet parking is needed. There is a handicap lift avaiable inside the hotel where there are a few stairs. Very Walkable neighborhood & on Tuesday evenings, there's a wonderful farmers market right outside the door! Loved it. Great little street that offers food & convenience options. The hotel only serves coffee, tea & hot chocolate. A great surprise was a private jacuzzi you can sign up for by the hour. It's first come first serve & there are cameras to prevent couples from using it for other purposes. Transportation on a free shuttle that takes you to the cannery..just a great place to stay!

The Monterey Hotel is in an ideal downtown location and for the price we got was perfect for a little July 4th getaway. The hotel is a historic landmark but it’s showing its age a little bit and the carpets in our room on the second floor needed updating and the bathroom fixtures were a bit worn. Our second floor room had an odd narrow hallway to get to the actual bed and the room was a bit cramped. The bed however was very comfortable and the staff are very friendly. Their “grab and go” breakfast menu in the lobby could be a little more generous and consists of coffee, fresh fruit and granola bars, (but the coffee is decent) If we get another great price like we did before we’ll definitely be back and hopefully get a room with a better view this time!

Staying at this vintage hotel was a fun experience. The bed was very comfortable. The staff were kind. The coffee in the morning was nice. Lots of great places to eat near by. Be sure to reserve time for the hot tub.

the location is perfect so close to downtown and also close to some free public car parking in the weekend. unique furnitures very elegant and interesting. There was no breakfast included with my booking , I believe it may be a service they do not provide.

I had an amazing stay. The building itself was beautiful with high ceilings and friendly staff. There are plenty of places to eat close by and the hotel is not too far from Cannery Row. There is only street parking available but I had not problem finding parking nearby for overnight. If you like staying in hotels with charm and history I would highly recommend this location.
