Vanbrugh House Hotel

Lovely hotel. On cute street with coffee shops and pub. Close to shopping, buses, restaurants. Just be prepared: NO elevator. No AC-they do provide a fan but if it’s above 70 degrees the room gets warm. Definitely would stay again and request ground floor room. Location is Amazing.

Very convenient to the Bus Station, Glouster Green, and downtown Oxford. Very quiet as well as it is on a side street. Good value for the convenience. No parking but was OK for me as I was on bus transport.

The hotel rooms are lovely but have no AC and so the rooms were even hotter than it was outside. Fans were provided but didn’t cool the room down. Note also there are no evevators and suitcases need to be carried upstairs. The receptionist kindly brought one of our bags up for us.

Location is very convenient, walking distance to my meeting, and dinning. A little hot due to the weather and no aircondition in the room. No lift available due to the long history of the building.

Stayed a couple of nights in a superior room which was large with comfy bed. Lovely old building so there are stairs and corridors in a random fashion. There is no dining room & we chose to eat out for a cooked breakfast at one of the many local cafes.. It's in a very central location off a main road, so quiet. We got the train to Oxford & it was walkable from the station.

Excellent location and smooth check in with helpful staff. Unfortunately my room was next to a pub and was v noisy however the staff found another quieter room quickly for me. Issues with the TV remote controls in both rooms and the air con didn’t work and the room was v warm. Breakfast was an additional charge of £20 which didn’t include a cooked breakfast so not really worth the money. Overall hotel is in an excellent location but needs some attention to detail to justify the cost.

Hotel has no AC and no lift. We were on the top floor and it was HOT. Bed was so small and pillows were like rocks! Breakfast was horrible. Do not select this as an option. Dry cereal, 3 jars of yogurt, 2 bananas and some apples. Packages of cheese and a piece of ham shredded into pieces. Some bread, pastries from a package jam and butter. Juice in bottles, coffee and tea. Yikes!! Location is great walkable. But expensive for the quality of the rooms. Would have done better with an uber and a better room

The hotel is very well situated right in the centre of Oxford which is great, however trying to get parked near the hotel was impossible and I ended up having to park in the Redbridge Park and Ride and come back in. The hotel is in need for a refurb, the room has no air conditioning, a fan was provided but it wasn't sufficient to cool the room. The toilet in the bathroom was broken, and the room was definitely in need of a face lift. The breakfast is basic, i ordered granola and yoghurt, what was delivered was a muller corner, they don't even offer toast. Overall the hotel was a disappointment for what it cost.

On the plus side, the location is great. It's easy to access restaurants, shopping, and transportation. Our room was spacious and clean, and the staff was helpful and friendly. However, external renovations are going on, which were not mentioned on the website. There are very few amenities. There is no elevator and no one to assist with luggage up and down the stairs. There is no phone in the room, so you have to make your way to the front desk to resolve any issues. This can be a great stay but it does need some updates.

Staff were friendly. Location brilliant. However bedroom was dated and simple - did not look like the nice room photos used in their marketing. Bed very hard. The bathroom smelled of damp and had black mould in the grout and silicone, and radiator was rusty and dusty. Felt like a very overpriced stay.

The location for Oxford city centre is great. The rooms however are tired. We arrived and then bed wasn’t properly made so we had to remake the bed which revealed a stained mattress under the topper. The bedding was old with holes in places. The throw across the bottom of the bed was stained.

The advertising was misleading as to room size and quality. The room was very small. The bed was small for 2 people. There was a smell of mold in the bathroom. No vaccuuming took place during our 5 day stay. No fridge. Coffee and water were appreciated.

Property is defintely lacking in maintenance ( certainly the room I stayed in), with water dripping from the floor above in the bathroom area. The bathroom door also seems broken and ignored. Definitely overpriced for the poor state of facilities.

Hotel was in a great location and room was nicely laid out and spacious. I do think it was overpriced for the following reasons: There were a couple of bits which could have been cleaned to a higher standard. One example being my daughter ended up with a pimple patch stuck to her from a previous guest! The shower did not drain very well so you were standing in a pool of water for the entire shower. Also, there are works going on outside the front of the hotel, which started with an early delivery at 6 in the morning of what sounded like rocks or stones. Then work began just before 8 with the very loud throwing of stones into the back of a truck. It was far from the calm and relaxing morning we had hoped for.

First the positive. The location is great and the service is good. The negative is that it was constantly very hot in the room regardless of how long the window was open despite the normal summer temperature outside. Friday evening music was heard from somewhere which ended at 1. No chance to sleep due to really high noise level. Dirty duvet and substandard tiling in the bathroom. You didn't really have to look for the flaws.

Lovely room, very clean and well maintained. Bathroom was huge and luxuriously appointed.

Pleasant staff in a superficially stylish but rather tired hotel: scuffed painted furniture, black-mould on blobby mastic in the shower, poor water pressure, shower control not fully functioning... Nice things like Nespresso machines, with biscuits and real milk, let down by mugs too big to fit under the machine's spout. Doubt I'll ever stay there again.

Great location. Room was clean and spacious. No air conditioning, but there is a fan in the room. Windows also open for a nice breeze. Office staff is friendly and helpful. Bottle of wine was a nice welcome gift.

The Vanbrugh House is wonderfully located in the center of historic Oxford. Short walking distance to all the colleges, restaurants, bus station. A little longer but easy walk to train station. Cool historic building. Our family rented 3 rooms: 2 smaller ones and a larger "superior double". All were fine. The superior room was especially large, even by US standards (although the bathroom and shower were tiny). My only negative was that all the beds were pretty uncomfortable. Really hard mattresses. Otherwise this was a five-star experience and (even with that) we would be inclined to stay again.

Very comfortable bed. Great location. But the rooms are tiny. Nowhere to put things.

A 3 star hotel in a central location. Rooms are well appointed but very dark and have seen better days. Extremely noisy at night as the windows are single glazed; you can literally hear the footsteps of someone walking by. Often late night revelers and early morning (8am) construction right outside windows so a very poor night’s sleep. Not your best option in Oxford unless you get an incredible deal.

Wow! What can I say we stayed in the suite and I don’t think we will ever top this. It was uniquely beautiful. Everything down to the beautiful 4 poster bed, the most stunning bathroom with 2 baths side by side, with a tv, to the beautiful court yard we had to sit outside. I cannot fault this room it’s blown our expectations and I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone. We have never stayed in a hotel room so much. The location was also perfect, being a stone throw away from the main high street. We will definitely be back

Vanbrugh House is a very interesting period property to stay in but I couldn’t really call it a hotel, more luxury serviced rooms and suites. We were upgraded from superior double to a suite so I shouldn’t complain, but for a 4 star hotel many of the little touches weren’t there - eg no glasses for water in the room, missing remote control for the fan heater, only enough Nespresso pots for 2 drinks each.

We stayed in the Lewis Carroll Room and it was spacious and clean. Nice bathroom and felt great. Super central so you can walk to everything and the staff were lovely and helpful. We were woken up super early by the bin men over the road, but such is a inner town location. No lifts, so had to drag my cases up the stairs and that wasn't fun, but ho hum....

Absolutely awful. Paid for the suit, get there and it’s right next to reception and you could hear everyone coming in and out all day and all night long. Literally sounded like someone was in the room with us. Breakfast was an absolute shambles, coffee machine in the room was broken- told the staff and all we got was ‘oh sorry about that’. All the breakfast food was packaged rubbish from Sainsbury’s, tea was stone cold, granola was clumped together, orange juice was warm. So over priced it’s insane. Hotel was tired looking. Not even remotely worth the money, better off in a premier inn. Was so bad we checked out early

Before our stay, my partner rang up to confirm our room had a bath and was assured we would. However on arrival we were told the room with the bath was occupied. We were given some Prosecco to compensate which was generous. However, this was not the most disappointing thing. On the second night none of the lights would work and the receptionist spent about 40 mins fixing the issue. We were sat in the dark very close to booking another hotel and leaving. The receptionist did manage to turn them on but didn’t apologise & made us feel like we were inconveniencing her. After agreeing to stay we discussed a late checkout as it was now later then we had planned to relax in the room. the receptionist confirmed we could check out at 1pm only to be woken up at 5 to 12 with a loud knock on the door being told we had to leave at 12. The staff members words were “ the receptionist made a mistake you need to check out by 12 as someone is checking in to this room early” no apology was given. Checking out we explained our disappointment to Hugo on reception who was less than helpful. Neither an apology or compensation was offered and we were charged for the late checkout we barley had We understand mistakes are made but the way the staff made us feel was not really acceptable. The room was okay but tired but it did have a lovely little courtyard. We have booked another night else where to try turn our anniversary around. Thanks to the gent who helped show us our room(only helpful one)

Check-in took 25 minutes; the hotel required additional information on paper which had already been supplied on line. Each check-in took 10 minutes as a result.

The initial room I was offered was room 4. There was enough noise from a nearly bar to be disturbing. The staff were able to move to another room but this might not have been possible.

Absolutely love this hotel. Our must stay in Oxford. Staff is by far the friendliest we have ever had and this is our second stay. Will be back in March!

Overall was a nice stay at the hotel but one of the staff Elena is the best! She is very helpful in all kinds of way! She made my day!

We arrived at the Vanbrugh House Hotel for our anniversary expecting our standard double room booking and what we paid for. They surprised us with an upgrade at no extra cost to the Vicarage Suite which was absolutely phenomenal. We had two baths and a shower, multiple sofas with a huge kingsize bed along with chocolates and a bottle of prosecco in ice. We can't recommend this hotel enough. The suite even included its own private garden!

Loved the hotel and room and the staff were amazing. Walkable to everywhere and loads of food options nearby. The reception staff were great, would 100% stay again. Thank you for a great trip to Oxford.

Opted to pay at the hotel. Not only did they take a full payment 4 days early they then took it again on the day of arrival. Lots of attmepted explanations but still took it twice when they weren't supposed to. They need a plumber in the bathroom as well. Shower controls were very stiff, shower didnt drain away and a tap didn't twist the right way. Shower

Dropping off bags SO helpful, and all the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. Excellent continental breakfast included. So walkable in this beautiful university town full of history.

This was a great place to stay for our trip to Oxford. It was a very handy location for walking to all the attractions.

The Vanbrugh House Hotel was a nice hotel in a wonderful location in Oxford. It is surrounded by the university colleges and many restaurants and shops.

Very close to theatre and shopping with good selection of dining in the area. Also convenient for travel from park and ride at Peatree.

The hotel is really conveniently located in Oxford within easy walking distance to the shop. The hotel room size was very generous and comfortable, we stayed in the superior double room, which was located at the front of the hotel. The hotel is located on a street which includes various student bars. unfortunately, the night we stayed, our sleep was so badly interrupted by the noise coming from the students, which didn’t die down until 3am, which spoilt our stay. I appreciate this is outside the control of the hotel, but I wouldn’t stay here again due to this.

An historic property in the centre of Oxford. All the major sites are in walking distance. We had a great stay

Great location in center of town.

In the middle of Oxford, that’s a huge benefit of the hotel. On the other side, given the new non-emission zone in Oxford the transfer is a bit challenging. Nevertheless, taxis are absolutely affordable from any station or Park Ride

Very helpful staff at reception. Room was great and exactly what we expected (maybe even more spacious). My daughter and I were able to have a relaxed evening and in the morning, it was a short walk to amenities in Oxford. Only two points to raise: 1. A hotel of this calibre should really have a parking deal negotiated with a local venue. 2. No eggs or hot options at breakfast made the breakfast feel overpriced. If you need to, charge a bit more but I would recommend these be made available.

In the middel of Oxford city, great. Charming Old building with helpfull staff. Great breakfast served in a different Way: in a picnic basket served at your room or the dinningroom - charming.

The only disappointment was the continental breakfast was poor

What a lovely hotel, we had a room on the Ground Floor with its own little garden. Breakfast was a delight, delivered to our room in a picnic basket.

Very old rooms, the pictures give a very wrong impression. Bathroom very old, shower not in the bathroom but in the room, old carpet, dirty curtains, completely overpriced for what you get. Breakfast very simple.
