The Andrews Hotel

The hotel is in a wonderful location with polite and helpful staff. Some lovely details: the room had bathrobes, an ironing board, good-quality shampoos, and — most importantly — a shower with a handheld showerhead instead of one fixed to the ceiling. However, there are major downsides. The building is very old, including the furniture. The heating system is centralized and the radiators turn on automatically. To my surprise, in the middle of July, the radiator suddenly turned on at full power, making the room unbearably hot and stuffy. I went to the reception, and they promised to turn it off, but it came back on at 2 a.m., making it impossible to sleep. I ended up changing hotels. There is also no fridge in the room. You can request to store your items at the reception, which is very inconvenient. The same goes for ice — there’s no ice machine, and you have to ask at reception, where the staff would disappear to the basement to get it.

The area is still up and coming but very walkable to the conference and shops and dining. The restaurant was really good and other ones near by. Tea and coffee all day and in the room. Hot showers! Digital TV. Good heater. No ac but ceiling fan was good and great price! No parking on site but near by in and out lot!

good: clean , convenience, located at downtown area so it is easy to get public transportation. Continental breakfast every morning with coffee bar at lobby. Vintage style , staff is friendly & helpful. improvement: flushing toilet noise during bedtime. No fridge nor air conditioner in room.

This is one of a kind restaurant and I enjoyed my stay! It is quaint. The atmosphere is cozy and the staff friendly and helpful. Public transportation is walkable. The in-house restaurant serves delicious pasta. They serve breakfast in each floor and that definitely brought the hotel to a new level! This hotel definitely has the personal touch!!!

Pros: beautiful lobby, good customer service from front desk, friendly and kind cleaning staff, one of our rooms was spacious and airy, the coffee machine in the lobby is quite good. Free glass of wine from 4 to 5 is a nice touch. The elevator is historic and elegant and fun! Cons: The area was not what we expected – we understand it’s the city, but it was a lot more dangerous than we anticipated. Would not return to this hotel solely because of the neighborhood. Loud fights from neighboring apartments and people on the street screaming profanities. Open drug use within half a block of the hotel. Lots of vagrant and mentally ill people loitering outside the hotel lobby. It was hard to get a good nights rest because of the amount of noise coming from the street. That’s really our only complaint.

On the listing it says that they have parking available. What is not stated is that the parking is Valet and is $52 a night! This parking was also the only way to ensure that my car wouldn’t get towed at night. I knew that I would need a security deposit but was not expecting it to be only $40 cheeper than the room it’s self ($150) and I was not planning on it being that much and almost didn’t have money for my trip or gas back home, I will say that they were very accommodating and the deposit was back in my account within the hour, the elevator was not the best and due to how it works my dad and I stuck to the stairs. The room itself wasn’t the worst, the bed was comfortable and served its purpose, the bathroom was very small and when taking a shower I barely had any room to move. The morning we left checkout went fine but another thing they forgot to mention was that I couldn’t get my car until 8. They noticed I was upset and I ended up getting it 20 min early. The hotel was accommodating for each of my issues but still I don’t think I would recommend this place or go back purely based on communication. I also was not told how much the deposit was until AFTER they ran my card.

The hotel has an excellent balance of quality and price, almost low price for the location. My only disappointment was the breakfast. The offerings were fine, pastries fruit yogurt, but served in the lobby, with very little seating.

Friendly accommodating staff. Restaurant Fino is attached and is frequented by locals. Fresh pasta, warm vibe! Rooms are small, clean and efficient. Could use some TLC.

Although it could have been a decent choice, there were several issues: Front desk staff were unhelpful, even shrugging off the fact that the only place in the hotel to get coffee was a broken machine. The room and bath were so small (no individual temp control) that I had to wedge my knees under the sink to sit on the toilet. The shower was tiny, with a leaky shower head and mold. The bright spot was the restaurant in part of the space, FINO. It was amazing in both service and cuisine.

Donuts and plain bagels are the bulk of the breakfast offerings, along with small yogurts and some fruit. The bed and room was very comfortable, the windows need a clean and the curtains were dusty.

This was our second time staying at The Andrews Hotel. Staff is always friendly and check-in/check-out process is simple. It’s a great price for it’s location. However, the bathroom still had a previous guests’ belongings in the shower (they left a razor, used shower cap, and a used towel). Overall, I’d stay there again, but I’m a little wary of uncleanliness.

The Andrews hotel is a nice hotel. Staff was great. Could use carpets cleaned. They don’t have refrigerators in rooms. TV is very small. Bed was fairly comfortable. Overall I would stay again. Just bring a cooler to keep stuff.

Room was not vacuumed, no towels (had to ask), tiny tv, no night tables to put my stuff on, and way over priced. Nevertheless if you don’t mind the feel of a lower class not so tidy room in an old hotel, it was nice. Old architecture has it’s charm although dirty. Very convenient to everything in Union Square and that’s why I stayed there. Staff was courteous and helpful and continental breakfast was a nice touch.

The hotel is very old — the carpets, walls, and windows look like they've never been cleaned since the day the building was constructed. The room was very small, but acceptable for one person. There was a terrible smell in the room, and throughout the hallways. The breakfast was extremely poor, and you literally have to eat it in the hall.

Check-in was cordial and efficient but could’ve used a touch of warmth. The bedroom itself was great: bright, spacious and quiet, with excellent quality bedding. The floor wasn’t 100% clean (black hair here and there on the floor and pieces of plastic by the foot of the bed and by desk) What we truly disliked was the bathroom because of how small it was. Tiny sink and extremely narrow shower space. The water pressure, however, was great, and the good news is that we were told at check-out that new management will be remodeling and expanding those bathrooms. Breakfast was good but taken in the lovely but rather small reception area for now. Our understanding, however, is that it will soon be happening in the adjacent restaurant “Fino”, which was our suggestion to staff at check-out, so everyone can sit. Selection was good and fresh (bananas, yogurts, freshly baked donuts, bagels, cream cheese, jams and mini cinnamon rolls) Coffee machine with a variety of selection is available all day. We selected Good over Excellent mostly because of the bathroom situation. Otherwise a lovely hotel we would recommend walking distance to the theatre district. (so watch where you walk where it borders the Tenderloin area…)

The wifi is terrible

The room was very small and the carpets old. Very much like a single room occupancy. The bathroom, too, was very tight. The water pressure was fine, the location good. The walls are thin, but I sleep well in most conditions, so it was fine. The bed was comfortable.

It was a fine stay especially for the price. Staff was very nice. I was on the sixth floor which had an off-putting smell. The bed was very firm and pillows quite small with one pillowcase that had a stain. The desk in the room is almost too small to use and the tv is almost laughably small. The bathroom sink constantly dripped. Again, for the price, it was fine.

I enjoy the variety of boutique hotels in San Francisco and often like to try ones new to me. This time I needed an overnight stay close enough to let me and my husband walk to The Warfield for a show and not break the bank. The Andrews fit the bill. Pack earplugs if you need quiet, but coming from someone with sound sensitivity, the noise is worth it for the comfort and convenience that The Andrews offers. Also, if you stay during a heat wave, be forewarned that the hotel does not have AC - only ceiling fans. But thankfully, the weather is usually on the cool side. Our room on the 7th floor featured a bedroom with closing door, small but clean bathroom, and a tiny parlor in between the two. Hotels in the city are commonly 200 sf or less, so privacy is at a premium. Separation of bed and bath is a particularly nice bonus when you can find it! The bed was comfortable and there was a sink and mirror in the bedroom which allowed my husband a place to shave while I got ready in the bathroom. After the show, I appreciated closing the bedroom door to let my husband sleep while I sat by the parlor window, continuing to wind down. All in all, this is a quirky, little piece of history which survived the 1906 earthquake and holds a lot of stories in its halls. (Read the history of The Andrews which can be found in the surprisingly smooth, closet-like elevator.) We'll stay here again, and next time try the charming attached restaurant and bar, Fino.

Room was quite small, "free breakfast" was more like a snack, and worst of all was the heat. There's no AC, but on top of that the heating kept turning on. I tried asking the front desk to turn it off, but even so it seemed to keep heating throughout the night. It was unbearably warm and thought it ended up cooling down slightly, it was still uncomfortable by morning. At this time the radiator was still hot to the touch in the morning, which meant it was still heating up my room.

It’s an old building. No air conditioning in the rooms, the beds are very uncomfortable and the rooms are just old. There is an elevator which is old as well, but runs good. We booked a queen room and got a wobbly full size bed. There’s a tv the size of a computer monitor in the rooms. The bathrooms are tiny, even the shower faucet is tiny. The staff was GREAT. The hotel overall was very calm and quiet. Parking sucks in this area, you will be paying for a parking building as well. The location is great, near a lot of places to eat and bars within walking distance. For the price it was good. I would stay here again.

Requested an upper floor room away from the street and got a second floor unit right next to the street. Terribly noisy. Rooms are small and showers are even smaller. Poor insulation so quite cold

The room with a King size bed had an extremely small bathroom. One could barely fit in the shower. The bathroom door was a sliding door and did not close properly. There was no AC and if one opened the windows one could not sleep with the noise of homeless people yelling in the middle of the night and police sirens. I couldn’t sleep. I will never book this hotel again. The only positive is that it had valley parking for $65 overnight.

No air conditioning. The shower floor needs to be scrub more. Get bigger TV's. Have bigger sinks.

The rooms are entirely too close together and you can’t get any good sleep because you hear every conversation from the other guests, every door close, the trash man constantly working outside and this was all on the 6th floor! Way too noisy!

I contacted the hotel several times through the Hotels app and even emailed them directly. I never received any reply. I will never use this app again. If I need to contact a property, I expect a reasonable response time. With this app and this hotel, I never got any reply at all. I am very disappointed.

Place was near a lot of dining places. Conveniently close to 630 Jones patio bar. Staff was friendly. Only issue I had was that when at checkin, they tried to change my booking to another hotel that I didn’t not reserve for. When asked additional questions as to why my room wasn’t held onto, he just responded by okay okay I’ll check you in here… after checking everything was smooth and easy.

(TLDR:stay at the Fitzgerald next door instead) Story time So we walk up to the Andrews, try to open the door, and there’s a note on it that says “door may be locked, ring door bell”. I try the door, it doesn’t move, so I ring the door bell. There’s a man in the lobby who clearly works there, but he ignores me. So I ring again. He ignores me. I ring again, he ignores me. This goes on for a while until he rolls his eyes and sarcastically waves me to come in. Then checks me in with a really bad attitude, like he’s angry at us. Rude but okay I guess? I take the elevator up and the doors open to a man bent over on all fours hammering at the wall. There’s a ladder, cement bags, and wood panels in the hallway. Confused, I walk around the ladder to get to our room. It smells harshly of saw dust and paint. It was clearly just painted, and the construction on the room next to it is affecting the whole floor. I tell the front desk guy this and he refuses to apologize and says I should find a new hotel, instead of trying to find me a new room or comp me. I already paid and checked in, I can’t find a new room now. The next morning I’m awoken to alarms blaring “EVACUATE THE BUILDING FIRE DETECTED”. Of course we get our bags and run out. This is the third hotel we stayed at on this trip, by far the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. It’s criminal that I had to pay for that. I got the most expensive room in the hotel and was treated like trash because why? Skinny, short hair desk guy

We came earlier than our expected check in and they attended to us immediately. I stayed at the hotel with one other friend. We originally had a queen room but they upgraded us for free when we arrived. The staff was very kind and accommodating, they provided us with the extra items we needed such as an iron immediately. The free breakfast was nice, we went in early April and they had donuts, yogurt, and fruits. The area is a short distance from Union station so it was very easy to navigate the public transport. It does get a little shady at night and the walls are on the thinner side so it would be wise to ask for a room on the upper floors. It does get loud at night because of the activity on the street but thats San Francisco. Overall a very great stay!

The people on the front desk were nice and lovely and helpful that people are cleaning the rooms helpmates they stole $100 from my curvy plushy and I really didn’t appreciate that. That is my hard work on money.

The building is old and beautiful, well preserved. The staff helpful and friendly. Area easy to walk abd accesible to public transportation.

I loved the history of the property and how they kept a lot of the old features. The restaurant was amazing and it was walking distance to many attractions

Clean room, nice location.

The price, clean, location was perfect. Two blocks from Union Square. Lots of holiday shopping if your into it. Walkable. Lots of food options. Told the quality of the hotel has slipped. Kool elevator. Felt big city safe. Always keep your situational awareness up but we had no issues walking around at night. Some homeless but not an issue. Seemed safe around the hotel. Never rent a car for a visit to the city. Learned that last time. Tough to find parking and no need for a car. Lots of transportation options. BART get you close to the hotel from the airport.

Building and hotel is really unique and beautiful. Restaurant next to it great as well but the area is so noisy, unsafe and dirty. Unfortunately that is Sanfran downtime after covid but looks like it’s slowly improving.

Overall convenient very close to Union square but the area is very dirty, hotel is dated, and walking the wrong way will put you in the tenderloins.

The hotel is in a great location to visit SF, just 3 blocks from Union Square. Coffee in the morning and available during the day was a plus. Loved the front room with a small living room and desk.

stayed for a friend's birthday party nearby and the room was clean and nice plus the price was reasonable. I enjoyed the staff, wine offering, and free continental breakfast and coffee.

We came back for a second time, great location, attached to a restaurant that is excellent. Good coffee and tea selection in the lobby with a small buffet breakfast available on different floors ( we lucked out and had coffee and croissants a stones throw from our room) Would stay again for the central location and closeness to cable car.

Some of the staff were more proactive than others. Ish was incredibly helpful whereas some of the others gave more attention to their cell phone than the clients. They were pleasant enough when asked but clearly their minds were miles away. The lobby was not equipped for accommodating the large numbers for breakfast and it became cramped if crowded. Other than that excellent bed comfort and room and bathroom comfort.

Nice vintage hotel conveniently located to restaurants and activities. Only drawback is I wish their breakfast included whole fruit and some source of protein (yogurt, cheese etc). This location was convenient to pier 27 for our cruise.
