We had 3 nights at this charming B&B. Friendly and helpful staff and a clean, comfortable bedroom. A continental breakfast is served, plus scrambled eggs and either sausage or bacon. Parking is available across the road in a parking garage at $40 per night and you can take the car out once a day. The cable car stop is literally at the end of the block and is great for getting to Fisherman’s Wharf. A short walk to China Town. The area felt safe around the hotel. We enjoyed our stay.

The hotel is fine for the price but the rooms are NOTHING like the hotel.com pictures. Not at all. And the elevator is out so we had to carry our bags up and down 5 flights of stairs. And no AC. The staff was nice, and location good.

The hotel is very nicely decorated and fits the old French-style aesthetic pretty nicely. It even has an old-fashioned elevator, although this does prove to be inconvenient during busy hours as it is quite slow. The hotel itself isn't super large, but the room and bathroom were very clean and spacious. The included breakfast was also tasty, although it didn't have a huge amount of variety. The front door is protected with a lock that guests use a key fob to enter, so the hotel feels quite safe. However, I noticed that the receptionist is not always present, so sometimes I do have to wait a few minutes for someone to help me.

Very clean hotel. Central location. Tiny bathroom and small room (no A/C but not ready needed ). Daily room service and very friendly staff. Overall not a bad place to stay. There is no hotel parking but a parking garage is across the street for $40/day.

I wish I could post a higher rating for my one-night stay. However, after dragging a suitcase up the exterior stairs and through a heavy door (no bellman, and one has to be rung in), then finding out the elevator has been inoperable for months-- as well as the dining room being closed for renovation--I was disappointed that these issues weren't mentioned prior to booking. The room, an "upgraded" Queen, was rather small, but adequate--and quiet, with a very comfortable bed. Navigating the narrow stairway, in lieu of an elevator, is a bit scary. It needs better lighting.

The rooms were not clean. We had two rooms and in both rooms there was hair from the cleaning staff. Both rooms were smelly. There was no heating in the bathroom although it was really cold. I don't understand where this high rating comes from.

We have stayed at many hotels in SF, so for the price of this hotel, we knew it would be on the older side. My only complaint would be the shower. It was covered in black mold. Pretty gross! I will say the breakfast was pleasantly good and especially for the price that it was included in the hotel cost.

The included breakfast was a bit poor. It was adequate, but the eggs didn’t look very appetising and the bacon was half overdone and half undercooked. The croissants were dry and not made with real butter. The hotel food is a long way from its ‘French” identity pretends. The room was incredibly comfortable with a lovely bed, and it was well maintained through the whole stay. A very clean hotel. The style is charming, as is the old lift/elevator. The staff are lovely and helpful. It has good facilities. It’s in a really lovely location- which is super important.

Room was not terribly clean. Bathroom floor had hair and hair bands from previous guests. The door to the room did not have any way to double lock it from the inside. As a woman traveling alone, I did not like this although the hotel itself seems very safe. The heater in the room didn’t work, which I did not know until I work up freezing in the middle of my last night’s stay. The pillows: 2 were fine, the other two were lumpy (possibly old down?) and terrible. The room looked nothing like the photos online. It was fine for two nights given the price, but it could be such a nicer place! The deal was great

We loved our stay at this property BUT DID NOT HAVE INTERNET 3 out of the four days we stayed. NO TV and NO WIFI. Hotel breakfast is great and the staff is very kind but they seem frustrated they also have internet trouble.

Cute, quaint, European style hotel in downtown SF. It’s about 1.5 blocks from Chinatown. This hotel does not have AC, so fans are definitely needed in warmer weather. Our room was very small (cozy Queen) with a tiny bathroom, which was a challenge for two adults. Breakfast was included and was great. Would stay again but just in a larger room!

This hotel is walking distance to Chinatown and during the day, felt safe enough. But the walls are very thin! You can hear people walking and other things...I was surprised to see a few kids staying there considering how thin the walls are. The beds, floors, appliances...everything looks very old. Shabby chic? Nice breakfast included with the stay and friendly staff.

They do store baggages before check-in and after check-out. Wifi is too weak. Even cellular data also not working. There is an amenity fee of $20/day. Deposits fee need to pay individually and takes time to get it back. There was a convention recently, so no homeless nearby. But after finishing the convention, there were many homeless nearby. Breakfast was good and interior also nice.

Cant say enough good things about this hotel! The walls in the public areas and the rooms are beautifully decorated with hand-painted details. Each floor is themed after a different French artist, and decorated in their signature art/style. The former restaurant in the basement, which is now the breakfast space, has medieval French/Joan of Arc themed decor. My room was very quiet and comfortable, and I barely heard any street noise despite the hotel being located in a very busy area near Union Square. Breakfast was delicious, and definitely a step above a basic continental breakfast. The price was amazingly reasonable, especially for such a nice place in such a central location. There is also a beautiful old original elevator, which is a fun experience all by itself. It reminded me of several European hotels I’ve stayed in. I’ll definitely be staying here the next time I visit San Francisco!

We stayed in a room on the top floor. The property was not in as good condition as the photos indicated. The room was on a slant. The head of the bed was a higher than the foot of the bed and toiletries would roll off the ledges in the bathroom. The property is in a great location, but is at the top of a very steep hill. So be warned if you are walking from public transport like we did! The staff were helpful. Our shower wasn’t draining properly and this was fixed on Christmas Day.

I paid the fee since I had an event to get ready for. The next morning the attendant told me he reimbursed the $58 which I was thankful for. The room was fine, quiet - which I liked and convenient. Breakfast area was busy and all empty tables were not bussed/dirty. So I opted to make a plate and take it up to my room, no problem I thought. BIG problem, some kitchen staff woman came over and barked at me to only eat in the dining room. So I sat and ate on a dirty table as fast as I could. Maybe clean the tables so people dont get yelled at?? other than that its an OK place to stay.

Arrived to find the elevator or if service. Had received an email about it while in flight. Had to walk up and down narrow winding steps to get to and from our room. Second day had to ask for coffee for the room. It took about 30 minutes for sometime to find regular coffee and deliver to the room. Asked for late check out the day before departure and was told no problem. Day of departure we went for a trip to Alcatraz as our final adventure. Upon return we found house keeping in our room an be our stuff missing. We were told it was down stairs. Went downstairs to find the same manager who approved late check out and only some of our belongings. He made a bunch of excuses which to me were useless. When i asked about the rest of our stuff he had to "go find it". I think someone else who worked there wanted it too and thought we wouldn't notice it was missing. When he returned with it, it was all dumped into two separate bags, wife's makep was dumped out into a bag, etc. What was supposed to be a great get away for the wife and i would have been much better had e stayed somewhere else.

When i asked about the rest of our stuff he had to "go find it". I think someone else who worked there wanted it too and thought we wouldn't notice it was missing. When he returned with it, it was all dumped into two separate bags, wife's makep was dumped out into a bag, etc. What was supposed to be a great get away for the wife and i would have been much better had e stayed somewhere else.

The Cornell Hotel de France has been our go-to hotel for SF for several years now - it has been excellent, with top-notch service, and great value. Unfortunately, it appears that the hotel was recently sold to a new owner and the changes are already apparent. This morning (5/30), I went to the lobby for coffee. The coffee - which apparently had been sitting in the urn for hours (maybe last night?) was cold. My wife went downstairs over an hour later and the coffee was still cold and had not been replaced. The lady staffing the front desk - who said she was new - was unhelpful and somewhat rude. She was on her phone most of the time, seeming to be on a personal call, and clearly took the attitude that the coffee was not her problem. My wife voiced her complaint about the lack of service at check-out, and the lady at the front desk simply shrugged her shoulders and offered no apology, no concern whatsoever. What a disappointment if this is the what can be expected from the hotel moving forward.

We love the French ambiance of this hotel! The staff are very welcoming and helpful. This time the window in our small, basic room wouldn’t open, so the manager offered to upgrade us to a larger, nicer room with a window that would open. We could’ve used a fan that was in the closet, but he again offered to upgrade us, and we accepted. The new room was wonderful! We were very comfortable with cool air coming in the open window and slept very well. We wish their wonderful restaurant were still open, but there are several very good ones within easy walking distance of the hotel.

Our fifth visit to SF and an excellent hotel. Rooms, like most of the older buildings are slightly smaller than most US hotels/motels (but similar to UK or Europe rooms). Service was A M A Z I N G. From Claire (?) on the front desk to housekeeping and the gentleman on breakfast. Each and everyone was genuinely passionate about our stay and service. WiFi was good. Breakfast was excellent with bacon, sausage and egg + pastries and bread (weirdly no cereal). Area was good in location - handy for Union Sq, but without the noise. Coffee, water available in foyer and room. Room and hotel in great condition. A++

The hotel has a lot of character and is very clean. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The internet connection was a little bit of a problem, but everything else was great and I recommend this hotel to anyone who like to explore the City. Great location in walking distance to Union Square, China Town and financial district.

We had 3 nights at this charming B&B. Friendly and helpful staff and a clean, comfortable bedroom. A continental breakfast is served, plus scrambled eggs and either sausage or bacon. Parking is available across the road in a parking garage at $40 per night and you can take the car out once a day. The cable car stop is literally at the end of the block and is great for getting to Fisherman’s Wharf. A short walk to China Town. The area felt safe around the hotel. We enjoyed our stay.

Breakfast area was busy and all empty tables were not bussed/dirty. So I opted to make a plate and take it up to my room, no problem I thought. BIG problem, some kitchen staff woman came over and barked at me to only eat in the dining room. So I sat and ate on a dirty table as fast as I could. Maybe clean the tables so people dont get yelled at?? other than that its an OK place to stay.

Overall we were pleased with our stay. However breakfast had a limited selection and not enough supplied for the amount of guests. Not enough staff to cope with the volume of guests. And one of our biggest gripes was the use of Single Use plastic cups and cutlery and paper bowls.

The staff was very service oriented, friendly and helpful. The property itself was a bit more warn and rugged than shown in the pictures and many of the reviews. The breakfast was very basic and the second morning was delayed by an hour and a half due to the fridge being out of order. Location was great very close to Union Square and all the high end shops.

Very nice stay. Walking distance to anything you might need. I was able to find food with no problems. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks, all easily accessible and of a wide variety. Staff was very friendly and courteous. They had an agreement with a parking garage nearby so I was able to get discounted parking. I only wish their breakfast was better. It was very simple, not really anything special. And their restaurant was closed :( I really wanted to try it out.

The location was good, not far from china town and market street. Small rooms with no extras, not even a kettle, but good for the price. The breakfast was ok with a selection of items, eggs always cold and bacon overcooked, tepid water if you want tea but the coffee was ok. They advertise a discount at the next door japanese restaurant but there isnt one anymore so they should update this. Wifi is good but annoying to keep logging into every so often. If you want cheap but basic, more private than a YMCA but comparable price then this place is great.

Cant say enough good things about this hotel! The walls in the public areas and the rooms are beautifully decorated with hand-painted details. Each floor is themed after a different French artist, and decorated in their signature art/style. The former restaurant in the basement, which is now the breakfast space, has medieval French/Joan of Arc themed decor. My room was very quiet and comfortable, and I barely heard any street noise despite the hotel being located in a very busy area near Union Square. Breakfast was delicious, and definitely a step above a basic continental breakfast. The price was amazingly reasonable, especially for such a nice place in such a central location. There is also a beautiful old original elevator, which is a fun experience all by itself. It reminded me of several European hotels I’ve stayed in. I’ll definitely be staying here the next time I visit San Francisco!

We really liked staying at the Cornell. It was quirky and unique which I appreciate more than a generic modern hotel room /stay. Location is excellent. Breakfast is a good average.I would stay again and recommend. The downsides if it is important to you and I understand it may well be. There is no air con which would have made our stay a little more comfortable. There is a plug in fan however. The lift was a little temperamental which being on 6th floor was only a very slight issue . A fridge and kettle in the room would also have been appreciated although there was a communal area to be make tea. Speaking of tea I was very surprised to see a good selection of tea but no black / English breakfast and am sure you receive plenty of UK visitors. I had to buy my own / go out for tea. However I did live this hotel...I love different.
