I didn’t know it’s only valet parking.. I was circling around the property looking for the hotel parking .. The hotel name is too small to see from the street if your driving and not familiar with the area.. Very hard to see hotel name.. The property it’s self was beautiful very nicely renovated.. The designer did an impressive job.. I was very impressed..

Rooms are nice, clean and comfortable. Main bar Redwood Room closed on Sunday and Monday, so never experienced it and chose this hotel for that amenity. Shame it was closed. Had to change rooms as rooms ending in “31” share a wall with service elevator which is very noisy all night long. It hums and clanks. No sleep first night. Moved away from service elevator and that was far better. Lobby is quiet and lifeless lacking fun energy. Dull captures it. Overall the hotel is nice but needs some ambience.

We really enjoyed our stay at this property - the room was surprisingly large for SF, clean, modern and well appointed. There is a cafe downstairs with fresh juice and breakfast hot. The neighborhood is close to the tenderloin, so expect lots of homeless people, but I used to live in SF so I know that. It's a convenient location however, and I loved the hotel! Note there is no valet parking, but there is a parking garage around the corner that you can negotiate unlimited in and out privileges for about 40-50/day.

I booked this hotel on Hotels.com and was looking forward to it due to the images displayed on their site and on hotels.com. Unfortunately, those images are all renderings and very misleading. The hotel itself is in a not great location (it's fine). The real problem is everything else. I booked a 1 bedroom suite and when I walked into the room there was a bad stench, locker room, mildew smell that I could not get away. It was worsened by bad air freshener trying to mask it. I opened the windows which were filled with dirt and dust and I believe had never been cleaned. When I went to lay on the bed, I sank in all over the place. The mattress felt as though it had been carried over from the old hotel before they renovated or shipped from another location that had likely closed. It had definitely been used for multiple years. The duvet did not have a sheet over it and it had a bad mildew, dirty laundry machine smell to it that was so repulsive to me. Like layers of previous guests sweat. When I went to lay down, the pillows had the exact same smell. If I turned the AC off, the mildew smell from the bed would takeover the room. I called and asked for new pillows and a duvet. 2 of the 4 new pillows

Such a beautiful and very clean hotel. We loved being greeted each time we had entered the building, and loved how quiet our stay was. We had the best breakfast at Frederick’s that was located within the same building of the hotel and overall enjoyed how close it was to tourist attractions.

The facilities were great, except for the fact that the shower door did not stay closed. My main issue was the lack of sound proofing. I had very bad nights' sleep as I could hear doors slamming on my floor at all hours, as well as TV, phone calls and late-night trysts from adjoining rooms.

This hotel is beautiful, from the lobby to the bedroom. We have been so impressed. We had booked to stay in a suite, but got upgraded to the deluxe suite on arrival. Our jaws hit the floor when we entered the room. The room was spacious, the bed was comfy, the bathrooms were immaculate and the views were wonderful. We would certainly consider staying here again, we loved every moment of our stay.

The Clift Royal Sonesta is a classy hotel with topnoch service. We got upgraded to a suite for being an Expedia VIP. The Redwood Room bar is fantastic way to unwind after a day exploring SF sights. Jacqui at the bar is ecxcellent and very knowledgeable of the history of the Redwood Room. Staff at reception are very attentive. The doorman followed up the taxi when the first order did not turn up to ensure we catch our cruise to Alcatraz. We are very happy we chose to stay with The Clift Royal Sonesta. John & Maria

The Clift, for many years, has been a very nice hotel in the Union Square area of San Francisco. It's pretty much as I remembered it from a stay maybe 25 years ago -- although updated probably a few times since. Although the neighborhood has a gritty urban appearance, my wife and I felt very safe and secure. The lobby, breakfast restaurant and spectacular Redwood bar are all very handsome and welcoming public spaces. The staff was both friendly and quite helpful. Our executive room with two queen beds was very clean and well maintained. Housekeeping was excellent. The overall value we received for what we paid couldn't be beat, especially in a city where prices are very high for lodging, housing and food. As to food, there are several pretty decent diners within a few blocks for breakfast and lunch -- although the restaurant in The Clift is every bit as good as any of those diners.

Right at check in, the staff tried to sell us an upgrade package for 100$ more per night stay, all while talking down on the room we booked. So… already off to a bad start. The worst part had to be that apparently the security guard tried to come into OUR ROOM. opened the door, didn’t say a thing, and when we told the staff member, who happened to be the same person that checked us in - said “are you sure? Fine I’ll change your keys” but didn’t offer any solutions or apologies. Would NEVER stay here again.

The actual property was fresh and updated with a vintage vibe. The markdown was because they didn’t have enough people at the front desk at check in or check out which created a longer wait- large travel groups being processed both times, so it took 15 mins to check in and 10 to leave. Staff was very helpful though. Cleanliness was great, except that the sofa bed was wrinkled and we ended up finding a game boy switch cartridge in the sheets the final day, which confirmed it fear that the sheets hadn’t been changed. They have us a nominal credit for that, but still gross. Bar was nice Di had a $10 credit I was unaware of. Close to the theater district and union square- again a couple blocks from seedy Tenderloin. Stay on Geary while walking and you’re all good! 1 block away, O’Farrell and Ellis garage = $39 a night parking, so we saved on the hotel $75 a night valet.

The staff I found to be rather short, rude, not enough of them to check people in without a wait. Waited for about 30 minutes total between waiting to leave my bags with a bellhop and then checking in a few hours later. They also tried to upsell me to upgrade my room 2x - I was staying for a single night...a bit annoying. The attached cafe closed at 11AM (check out time) and the person who told me they were closed didn't apologize just stated "We're closed" and when I asked if there was anywhere else in the hotel to eat or get coffee he said "no" and kept doing what he was doing. The area is not the greatest so it's not a good idea to close the cafe right at check out time. At least stay open until noon - and be nice to guests?

Excellent hotel with extremely comfortable beds and very clean. The hotel rooms were renovated. Very quiet and central location. Only downside: the hotel is located at the border of the tenderloin district. Many homeless in the neighborhood and doesn’t feel save at night. We hope that the city gets this problem under control - then the hotel would be perfect.

The hotel was great, very comfortable stay and the staff was very accommodating. The area is tricky and isn’t the hotel’s fault. It’s a direct line to Union Square which is great but if you go two blocks down, you will hit the shady area of Downtown San Francisco. You just have to be mindful of that.

The property is close to Union Square and the famous Cable Cart system. Public transport is easily accessible from this location, so should you be interested in adventuring to other areas, this location makes it easy. There are several nice cafes and restaurants around, including the Redroom at the hotel itself giving lots of.options for dining. Be mindful that this property is located close to the Tenderloin, so be careful traversing at night.

I stayed here when in San Fran for business. The location is very central. The hotel is newly refurbished and is in tip top condition. They were very accommodating in making sure we had a quiet room. The redroom is worth a visit but be sure to go in happy hour otherwise it’s very pricey. The gym was equipped enough and clean. It could be more eco friendly, we hung up towels but they were still replaced. And the cups for coffee are disposable which seems unnecessary. I’m sure also there is a more eco friendly way to provide water in the rooms.

The hotel was lovely! The inside is very nice and my room was clean. I didn’t have a car to get around the city so I needed a central location and would recommend this hotel overall for easier Uber rides. My only issue was the surrounding area to the hotel. While I never felt unsafe, it still wasn’t a pleasant walk around the block.

The hotel itself was great. The room was large and clean; the staff was friendly. The only issue with the property is its location. It’s in Union Square, just on the inner perimeter of the Tenderloins. Walking a block or two in most directions will place you squarely in unsafe territory. The streets were filled with unhoused individuals, many of whom appeared to be on drugs. There was human excrement on the streets, etc. I would not stay there again for that reason.

This hotel was conveniently located and reasonably close to the UCSF Mission Bay Medical campus where we had appts. Facilities were wheelchair accessible and our room was perfectly laid out to maneuver the wheelchair as needed. The only complaints are the dinner menu was extremely limited and there were no cups in the room to make coffee.

Beautifully updated hotel in a great location, for the most part. As others have stated, when you leave the hotel to explore, make sure you take a right. Going left will lead you to an unsafe area with homelessness, drugs, and crime. Since we headed that warning and took a right everytime we stepped outside the hotel, we had no issues. Union Square is only a 3 - 5 minute walk from the hotel, there's great shopping and restaurants within walking distance from the hotel. It really is in a prime location. The breakfast in their restaurant is delicious and great quality, but it is extremely expensive. For example, a single Belgian waffle with a few berries on top is $21... no sides, just the waffle. Other than that, we have no complaints about our stay. If we go back to San Francisco, we'll definitely stay here again!

The stay was great, the only thing I thought was super tacky and deceiving was I had breakfast in the Fredrick’s cafe this morning which would have totaled to about $30 and the total was $39. I asked why it was so high and the man said “taxes”. I was taken aback cause I’m from San Diego and I heard it was more expensive in SF but I thought that was crazy. So I asked for an itemized bill cause I wanted to see what the tax rate was. When he gave it to me, there was a $6 service charge on there. Which is fine- add on a service charge. But don’t run my card, give me a slip that says total, tip, final total- and when I ask why it came to the amount you said “taxes”. No, sir, you were trying to double dip on the tip! So the stay was great except for the guy at Fredrick’s who acted in poor taste. The eggs Benedict was good though.
