Fitzgerald Hotel Union Square

Location was good. Don't count on using elevator, it's more of a luggage elevator. Don't think it mentioned during booking there was no air conditioner. The breakfast was literally bread and apples. The staff was friendly and professional.

Nice older hotel. Interesting furniture in the rooms. Small european-style elevator. Friendly, helpful staff. My only problem was that the WiFi coverage in my room was not good. However, when I had to do a 4:45 am zoom call, the staff let me use an office off the lobby.

Comfortable bed, quiet. My only criticism is don’t say “parking available” if you mean there is no parking except for concierge parking which is VERY expensive. Misleading.

The staff were helpful and the outside and lobby belie how nice the rooms are. Really quite pleasant. Impressively spacious. However: -very bad wifi from the 6th floor and I was hoping to get some work done. -I somehow de-magnetized by keys three times. It was unusually easy to mess up the keys.

This is an affordable hotel. But with that price, there are things one has to deal with. It is an old building. Difficult elevator to deal use with luggage. Very small rooms. No air conditioner so one has to leave the window open and it was noisy in the adjoining alley. The worst part were the bugs in the room and the bathroom sink. On the other hand, the continental breakfast downstairs was nice.

This is a standard 2 star hotel. Rooms are small, mine barely fit a double bed. The elevator is slow and cumbersome so i advise the stairs. Private bathrooms that were surprisingly clean, and i say surprisingly b/c i was met with a roach as soon as i entered the room. Freaked me out a bit but was there 2 nights and didnt see another the rest of the stay. Furniture was really worn nightstand showed exposed warped wood through its worn paint, but mini frig wasnt so mini and had a proper freezer with its own door above the frig. The continental breakfasr was nothing to write home about, BUT these days its nice that they are still providing breakfast. They need to update the flooring both in the rooms and hall for a cleaner look and the one piece of furniture (nightstand) could easily be given a fresh coat of paint/stain to make it look less run down.

I'm not sure what these other reviewers are expecting, rule of thumb, you get what you pay for. I didn't read the reviews till after I booked a room here and was expecting the worst! Honestly, everything was as described in the listing, I can't speak on the breakfast because I slept in. My husband and I had the King room, room 408, and it was cute. It had a fridge, microwave and tiny coffee maker. Note, if you opt to use the coffee maker bring bottled water, I had to use tap water and it wasn't great. The room was as clean as I expected a building to be that was built in 1910. Our bed and bathroom were clean, the only thing I noticed was a previous guest had spilt something in the freezer and it was left to fester. There isn't AC but we had a ceiling fan which was better than nothing and with the bathroom and bedroom windows open it was comfy. Our room looked out onto the alley which I didn't mind, we were only staying one night. We left and came back about 10ish and upon returning we noticed that the bathroom ceiling was leaking from the floor above and it was a pretty significant leak considering there was a small but steady flow of water coming down the wall and it was getting trapped behind the paint. We told the front desk right away and he came right up and took pics of it to send to his manager but that was all. It was fairly quiet through the night and I probably stay here again. Parking is about 2 blocks away. The elevator is epic & tiny. Conveniently located.

The hotel doesn't have parking lot in their facilities so it's veey expensive at the end if you go with a car

Breakfast is very basic, a bagel/bread (toast yourself), orange or apple, and coffee/tea. Serve yourself. Phone in the room didn't work and asked for 2 days to no avail to have that fixed, it never was. WiFi very slow.

Staff is so polite and very helpful. The beds were firm-great for anyone who has a challenged back. Elevator is vintage and really neat but, not made for modern luggage and wheelchairs. Super clean-I always check! Lovely, convenient stay.

Very clean and comfortable. Fun little place for a couple of days in San Francisco.

Spotless room.

Unfortunately my stay at this hotel was less than favorable. The room was not as clean as it should’ve been and there was a hair that was not my partner or I’s in our bed before we had even gotten in it. There were also multiple holes in our bed sheets unfortunately. The bed was very squeaky and the frame was clearly old since the base of it was torn in multiple spots. Our bathroom door did not fully close and in the bathroom there is liquid refillable soap, ours was less than half full. The TV would barely work and constantly glitch while the remote was a battle to use if you decided to turn on Netflix. Unfortunately because of this issue with Netflix we mostly watched cable. The microwave smelt strongly of Cup of Noodles and was not cleaned properly. The fridge smelt like mildew almost but was visibly clean. There were many times where our keycard to the room would not work and we would have to go all the way back to the lobby to get it fixed, fortunately the staff was always very accommodating and polite about it. Unfortunately I just did not have the most pleasant stay.

This is an old facility. That being said, it is well kept. Very clean. Some upgrades are in process. The bed was comfortable and the bathtub/shower tile were spotless.

Great staff, I did not get the room I reserved ( I reserved a queen deluxe, but got a 2 doubles room. It didn't really bother me, it was fine and the beds were comfortable. The room was old but very clean. The bathroom was spotless and had great hot water and pressure . The location was perfect. My only complaint is the electrical outlets need to be replaced as my phone charger kept falling out of the sockets. I would stay here again , but I would ask for a rear room. The street noise can be pretty loud , not a fault of the hotel, it's in a busy neighborhood. Thanks for a nice stay .

The hotel is very clean and front desk staff are very accommodating. Rooms themselves aren't anything to write home about; just enough for some beds, bathroom, small closet and TV, but they are very well kept. Hotel's location is smack in the middle of everything. You're just a few minutes walk from anything you might want on the east side of the city, and only 10 minutes walk from Powell street BART station, so you'll definitely be getting your steps in if you stay here. Only drawbacks I would say is that the breakfast offered was underwhelming, I wish something sweet was offered to go with the coffee. Also, being in the middle of the city means it is VERY noisy outside, so be prepared for that. Overall, a solid 8/10, would definitely recommend.

The location was good. The wi-fi reception was bad on the 6th floor, so they switched me to a third floor room. The room was bigger and had a better wi-fi reception, but there were ants all over the bathroom. So, I had to buy a bug sprayer next day and sprayed all over the place. Breakfast they offered is quite limited; just toasts, apples and coffee.

If you want budget accommodation this is for you. Nothing like the photos on Expedia. But it's still ok accommodation. Make sure you pack ear plugs, as the walls a very thin.

We booked the accommodation because the pictures looked great but it was nothing like the room. It was a tiny, old box. No bathroom space and water goes everywhere when showering. Wouldn’t stay again.

Rooms are so small, it ends before it even begins. Loud downtown noises all night. Sirens etc Neighbor opened their door and wake you up. Asked for an iron board, I had to pick it up from the front desk. No AC.. fan was noisy. Worst hotel ever.

We stayed because of the name of the hotel, as it is a family name. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Room was nice and had everything we needed. It was in a great area and we were able to walk or be picked up with ease.

Stayed here for a night in the SF. Service desk was frustrating. Guest told us to just park outside, there was no parking. We would’ve had to double park. We were two rooms, expecting them to be together, nope different floors. The card key for one of the rooms didn’t work, instead we had to go back down stairs and were given an actual key. The front desk person was inpatient and rude. The rooms were old and grungy. We picked this hotel because it offered a European vibe. The sink in our bathroom was cracked and falling off the wall, there was mold above the shower. The house cleaners spray a lot of room spray to make it smell clean. The beds are spring and squeak anytime anyone moves. The continental breakfast was sliced bread, cereal and yogurt. All in all, we won’t be staying here again.

This was the worst hotel experience that I have had in at least 10 years. The room keys did not work so we had to run up and down the stairs trying with different ones until they just gave us the master key. The bed was super uncomfortable, the pillows unbearable and you could hear anything happening on your floor on the one above and below. We left the hotel exhausted.

So, I booked this facility as part of a business trip based on some positive reviews on the site and the photos posted online. The good: * The room rates are reasonable for the area * _Some_ of the rooms are well maintained when passing by open doors.... which leads us to.... The bad: #1: Billing practices. The hotel billed a "refundable" $150.00 contingency and deposit, but when I asked for the receipt on the contingency fee as well as a receipt on checkout, they couldn't provide it. I cannot stress enough how HUGE of a problem this is on a corporate card, and the accounting issue this has caused is completely unacceptable. HEADS UP - If I don't see the refund come back in the next 72 hours, this is going back as a chargeback to the merchant account on the credit card. #2: Let's talk about room conditions. If you hop onto the website or take a look at some of the glowing reviews, you'll get a distinctive B&B feel. This appears to be true for some of the rooms I saw with open doors in passing while the maid was making them up. However, I can tell you that the room I was in, #609 on the 6th floor, was a disaster zone more likely to be found in an SRO or a hostel then a hotel or private motel. Mold, water damage, peeling veneers, etc. #3: While complaining about #1 and #2, the front desk let me know they get the deposit because "people stay and trash the rooms". Well, my room looked pretty trashy already. Did you not think I was a business traveler?

Around this hotel was unsafe. A lot of homeless, weird people, I felt like someone hit me at any moment. Someone was walking on street only underwear. Elevator was very old, very hard to open and creaking. I walked on 3 floor by stairs for safety. Breakfast can hardly be called breakfast. Coffee, toast and cereal to water. Only one good think was apples and oranges. No parking lot, they offered place to parking for $30 (regular car) on place actually was 40. Room was very small, not much access to bed. Bathroom very small, from under tub water was leaking on flore during taking shower. I decided check-out early morning and find anything else even I loose money for it. Absolutely not acceptable place for me and it's waist of money.

The property was in pretty good condition noting its’ advanced age. We had read a number of negative reviews but had no issues ourselves - rooms were small(ish) but quite comfortable and clean. Staff were helpful both via email and phone prior to our arrival, as well as when our flight was delayed by 12 hours and they happily checked us in at about 3am. Breakfast was adequate and very easy. The area is convenient for transport and the hotel is a very short walk from Union Square. The street noise is noticeable, but nothing you wouldn’t expect in a city centre.

This hotel is a hidden gem if you are going to sight see ! So convenient all transportation is within three blocks! If you don’t mind an older charming building with no frills, the room was clean and comfortable.

Service and room were very good, but the area surrounding the hotel felt a bit dirty and unsafe, particularly at night.

The Fitzgerald is a small European-style hotel in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Many of SF's main attractions are within walking distance, and the famous cable car to Fisherman's Wharf is two blocks away. If you'd rather save your money so you can spend it on food, sightseeing, (tour buses are available at Union Square). I'd choose the Fitzgerald.

The property was old and a little shabby but clean and the staff were very pleasant and polite but the area around the hotel was very dirty and unsafe with people living on the streets.

Good: The receptionist greeted me politely and I was able to check in fast. I arrived a little earlier hoping to sit at the lobby but there was a room available. The bed is comfortable, the sheets are good, has good bath wash, shampoo and everything is clean. Bad: - No bathtub (as advertised). - no insulated/quiet rooms. there is an inch of space under the door. You can hear people in the corridor. - breakfast is useless. I was expecting more than a glass of orange juice and a toast. - Sheets are cotton but not Egyptian cotton.

I was iffy about staying at this hotel because of the reviews and ratings. But we were on a budget. It definitely not a Hilton but it's in a good area and the hotel is antique but has it own beauty. Male receptionist was wonderful checking us in and out. Cleaning personnel is polite. The continental breakfast was great. Served bagels, oatmeal, fruit , coffee, tea and eggs on sat/sun, in a basement room, the decor in the room transform you into another era. Room was smaller than expected but it is way better than the photos on the website. New photos need to be uploaded. We slept well , no loud noise in or out of hotel just the normal city noise. Our room only had heater and ceiling fan, no AC.The hotel is a great place for Instagram pictures. It location is beneficial to travelers using public transportation.

The hotel is old so you should expect it to look a bit rundown. Sadly they’ve cancelled their complimentary breakfast despite the message in Expedia saying it was running 7-10am. You can’t beat the location, however and it’s very reasonably priced.
