Hotel was clearly recently renovated and is tastefully decorated. Standard rooms are a bit small, especially the bathrooms, but clean and practical. The HVAC unit on my room was old and very noisy, but did the job. The gym has one elliptical, two treadmills, cow bells and dumbbells of various weights, a step box and yoga balls. More than enough for my needs. No bathroom, nor rubbing alcohol to clean equipment after use, though. Staff was super friendly and ready to help.

Traveled with friends and 2 of the three rooms the air conditioner did not work. We were only there for 1 night so didn’t make a deal about it, but if I were staying longer I would have switched rooms. Shower didn’t drain so we showered in a puddle every time. Also NO PARKING GARAGE.

Perfect location to catch the Muni to the game, walk across the street to nice skate and enjoy Union square. The 12 pm checkout gave us enough time to go to breakfast and walk a little before checkout. Parking at the garage a block up wasn’t bad.

The first room had no hot water and the refrigerator didn't work. They sent "an engineer" who said he fixed it, but actually did nothing. Still with no hot water or refrigerator working we asked to move rooms. They moved us to a room with hot water and working refrigerator. However, the windows were completely insecure and unlockable and could be opened from the outside, the overhead light didn't work and another light was broken so room was very dark, the hotel phone had no place to plug it in, and the heat was always on and the room was over 90 degrees. They put nails in the windows to secure them, and gave us a control for the AC so we could turn off the heat. The weight room had no cleaning solution or wipes. The bar closes at 9pm and there is no way to buy a beer after that. The bar across the street closes at 11. This place should not be open. We heard others complaining too.

Moldy smell, air conditioner leaked and the floor was wet and the entire room had a moist feeling. Queen mattress on a full size frame. No counter in the bathroom, nowhere to put your person items. Windows faced another building windows. Would be nice if all the windows were frosted and a screen on the bathroom window. No parking, recommend a parking lot around the block. No cheap Great location

Obviously, I understand you get what you pay for. This property was right in the middle range as far as price. As a Hilton property I would not expect the TV to be ripped out of the wall, ceiling fan didn’t work, and no fan in the bathroom? The bar was closed for some reason for the two nights we stayed. Staff didn’t seem to care.

Construction going on on-site. They have me a room next to a room for which renovations are happening . Too noisy from early morning to 5 pm. Request to change the room was taken but they gave a different room on my after 2 nights by which time the stay was already over. Please request for rooms away from construction/ renovation. Otherwise good hotel to stay.

Enjoyed a peaceful stay at The Barnes. Staff was friendly and helpful. I greatly appreciated the complimentary coffee and tea in the morning. The one inconvenience I encountered was on Sunday night when my key card didn't work and I got locked out of my room for about half an hour, and it turned out the door lock battery was completely drained and not working. Reception staff sent facilities to try and recharge it but that didn't work either, and they were only able to open the door with a drill. After a long day of exploring the city, this was definitely a sour way to end the night.

The Barnes is a hop and a skip from Union Square. Probably one of the dirtiest parts of the city. The hotel was great. Walking the streets is iffy. There is absolutely no parking for the hotel. Just know that in advance. There's a public parking garage on the street behind the hotel. Go there first.

Comfort and convenience. That's what I liked about my stay. Close to BART/Muni/Cable Cars. Easy to get around. Staff was very helpful and nice people. My room was cleaned promptly every day and always looked great. Bathroom was shiny clean; small but fully equipped. The bed and pillows were very comfortable as well. The room could use a slipper chair. There were only two high chairs and a high top table. Not a problem for me, but some may not like as much. Plenty of room for another chair.

The location is the best part! The hotel is affordable and acceptable, but I felt like the room could have been cleaner. There was lint stuff and even a finger nail on the rug that made me think it hadn't been vacuumed. The in-room AC system didn't work at all, in spite of them sending a security guard up to try. Apparently they just don't have anyone in the middle of the night who can do it. So I couldn't adjust the temp. The shower drained very slowly. The bathroom overall didn't seem clean. I could go on and on. The desk staff was nice but I NEVER saw a cleaner or maintenance person.

Clean room and comfortable bed. The sink never drained properly. While I’m very use to sleeping in cold temperatures the thermostat was difficult to figure out. There was also a huge roach found in the shower on the 3rd night despite being clean.

The Barnes is in a great location, right near Union Square. That's its main virtue. The room we were in had air conditioning that wasn't working properly (the staff engineer had to come in and change the cable running to the outlet), and there was dust caked on the bottom of the unit. The property is old--understandable--but it appears neglected and in need of attention. We interacted with two staff members. One was quite friendly and pleasant; the other wasn't. Despite its location, I wouldn't choose to stay here again.

We stayed in a corner room across the street from a very noisy bar and garbage pick up area. The bottom of the bathtub was chipping and the water pressure was super low. Overall the room was ok, just very very loud, it was hard to get a full sleep.

When I checked into my room, the room provided to me was not cleaned at all and had an unmade bed, towels all over in bathroom and urine in toilet. Barely an apology and had to neg for compensation in the form of a room one size up which had an inadequate window AC and fan. Dismal front desk with computer issues and not customer service forward or solutions based. Lost so much time on a short work trip over this. Disappointing because it is a nice hotel and great location. Hope I was an anomaly.

Overall, the property was very nice and right in the middle of everything. The reason for the stars is because I left something at the hotel and called the same weekend about it. I never received a response. One would hope for better customer service.

The staff and service were fantastic. We were helped several times by several different staff and they were all wonderful. The area was central and close to good transport to get to most of the major sights. The rooms were clean and larger than we anticipated. The immediate surrounding area felt safe to walk as a family in the earlier portions of the night (we were sleeping later so I can’t report on after 10pm), but the area felt safe. Would definitely recommend The Barnes and stay here again if we return to San Francisco

We really loved staying at the Barnes. It is conveniently located in a safe part of town. It is also near the subway which makes it easy to visit other parts of the city and to get to the airport.

Good location and price. Compared to other hotels which were massively overpriced. Easy to get to from the airport. Use the BART train from the Airport terminal straight into Powell St station, a short walk to the hotel, very easy. Nice city break

Friendly staff. Convenient location to good restaurants like Pinecrest diner up the street from the hotel. Nearby Macy's and other shopping. Careful with the transport as the Lyft drivers have problems finding the front door!

The location is in the Union Square area which has a lot of homeless individuals so we did not feel comfortable/safe being out late at night. As for for facility the lobby was beautiful and the staff was great. Unfortunately the room did not like up to the first impressions of lobby area. Floor in the room was uneven and felt like I was walking on cardboard underneath the carpet. We had a great view of the brick wall. Check-in was at 3pm we arrived early and they did not have a room ready so they took are bags into a secure area and we went for a walk. Returning at 3pm they still did not have a room ready and had to wait an additional hour for a room and had to take a different room that what we ordered as one was not available. Overall all we enjoyed our stay and the staff was helpful and great to deal with.

The Barnes of San Francisco was a great stay. The staff was very friendly from the start to the end. It has a nice bar on the ground floor as you walk in. The rooms were quiet and spacious. It is a perfect spot for Union Square shopping and a block from Market Street where you can hop aboard a Street car.

Excellent location and value. It was very limited however. There was a continental breakfast offered for a fee but cheaper options were available elsewhere. There was also a very limited dinner service. There were ample options elsewhere with similar prices and greater variety. The staff were all great and the accommodations were as expected for a basic Hilton room.

This boutique hotel is a little gem in the middle of Union Square where you can walk to everywhere. So perfect during the holidays. The price is unbeatable and includes breakfast. The staff are so friendly and really added to our perfect stay. The only negative is its located on the cable car street so drop off/pick up is tricky, but there's plenty of parking a few minutes walk away.

Hotel is very old but in a great condition, super clean and staff are so friendly. they just need to work more on breakfast. I would give breakfast 6/10 only because there was no variety. But it was not bad.
